YMMV - Walmart - Philips Sonicare Elite Toothbrush (Discontinued) in Sonicare Essence Box $24.97

Walmart sells the Philips Sonicare Essence (Model HX5911/11) for $24.97. However, some boxes are coming with the discontinued Sonicare Elite (Model HX5910) inside. When it was available, the Elite retailed for around $100. It looks identical to the Essence, but has two brush modes (regular vibration and a more "shaky" mode), as well as 30-second interval notifications while brushing. The Essence has neither of these, and current Philips models with these features go for much more than $25.

So far I have gotten an Elite in both Essence boxes I've bought from Walmart: one off the shelf at a supercenter months ago, one ordered online last week. Also, several reviews on the Walmart product page for the Essence suggest others have received the Elite, even if they didn't know it (mentions of interval timers and dual brush modes).

See attached photos for how to tell if you scored an Elite. The packaging will have the HX5911/11 model number, but inside the handle of the toothbrush itself (under where the head screws on) it will have a model number stamp. If it says HX5910, you got an Elite!

It's worth noting that the packaging has "only at Walmart" branding, and I tried ordering an Essence on Amazon but got an actual Essence, so this might not be found elsewhere. I'm thinking Philips must just have leftover Elite stock and are funneling it into these Walmart Essence packages (perhaps specifically through the HX5911/11 packaging, as the Essence elsewhere is HX5911/10).

Was so glad to ditch my e series for a newer one. Those brush heads get so gross inside.

True, but a little maintenance goes a long way. I just hit the inside of the handle with a bleach-dipped q-tip whenever I clean the rest of the bathroom and it stays pretty mildew-free.

Costco has the current style for $60 for two. Better deal than this considering the upgrade.

Seconding this, e-series needs to go away. The inside gets super gross. Upgraded a few years ago, haven't looked back.

So they retail $25 for the basic model, but add $75 for a stupid simple software change?! Is this true? I am an embedded software programmer, FWIW.

I don't entirely understand the sequence of events, but it actually seems like the newer model did away with the additional features. My $100 quote on the Elite was based on a comment from an Amazon review of the Essence, mentioning how much had been paid for the Elite years ago. I'm not sure what the average price of the Elite was towards the end of its product life.
