Cloudflare Warp Free VPN Service

Cloudflare has finally released their much anticipated WARP and WARP Plus to the public which was originally announced back in April 2019.

The blog post is lengthy so here are some useful snippets:

"Before today, there were approximately two million people on the waitlist to try WARP ... For people just signing up today, the basic WARP service is free without bandwidth caps or limitations. The unlimited version of WARP Plus is available for a monthly subscription fee" ($4.99/month)

"From a technical perspective, WARP is a VPN. But it is designed for a very different audience than a traditional VPN. WARP is not designed to allow you to access geo-restricted content when you're traveling. It will not hide your IP address from the websites you visit. If you're looking for that kind of high-security protection then a traditional VPN or a service like Tor are likely better choices for you."

"WARP, instead, is built for the average consumer. It's built to ensure that your data is secured while it's in transit. So the networks between you and the applications you're using can't spy on you. It will help protect you from people sniffing your data while you're at a local coffee shop. It will also help ensure that your ISP isn't hoovering up data on your browsing patterns to sell to advertisers."

Additional Review:
https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/...-for-free/

"Cloudflare says that WARP is designed to secure the average user's data while browsing the web, unlike a traditional virtual private network (VPN) which would also hide your IP address.
WARP functions more like a transparent proxy that sends all your connections through a server designed to redirect all your Internet requests without actually altering them in any way.
However, this is not true in all cases since, as explained by Cloudflare's Zack Bloom, the IP addresses of WARP users will only be exposed to sites that also use Cloudflare. In all other cases, the users' real IP addresses will be hidden, with the visited sites seeing an IP from one of Cloudflare's address ranges."

"WARP comes with the same privacy protections that come with Cloudflare's 1.1.1.1 public DNS resolver:
  • We don't write user-identifiable log data to disk;
  • We will never sell your browsing data or use it in any way to target you with advertising data;
  • Don't need to provide any personal information — not your name, phone number, or email address — in order to use WARP or WARP Plus; and
  • We will regularly work with outside auditors to ensure we're living up to these promises."

WARP on its own is ***NOT*** a standard VPN. It uses a VPN system because Apple doesn't allow DNS modifications otherwise, but on its own, it is ***NOT*** a standard VPN.

Cloudflare claims that anyone "connected to the Cloudflare network" will see your IP - which could be, frankly, anyone at this point.

Now, Cloudflare does sell in the app WARP+ (note the bloody plus sign) which provides full VPN encryption of network traffic, including anonymous IP.

This notice is pinned to Wiki so you don't lose your job thinking you're using a full VPN, when you very much are not.

This part is pretty important since it doesn't hide you IP address. It does sound useful though if you want to protect your data if you're not on your own network.

Did they get rid of the waitlist? Yesterday there are like 2,000,000 people waiting if you click the offer for WARP after downloading the app(s)

Was on the waitlist and now I see 1GB limit, is the unlimited offer with free without bandwidth caps or limitations different?

Exactly. Although I've been reading the bleepingcomputer article and came across this:

"Cloudflare says that WARP is designed to secure the average user's data while browsing the web, unlike a traditional virtual private network (VPN) which would also hide your IP address.

"Let me start with the apology. We are sorry making WARP available took far longer than we ever intended. As a way of hopefully making amends, for everyone who was on the waitlist before today, we're giving 10 GB of WARP Plus — the even faster version of WARP that uses Cloudflare's Argo network — to those of you who have been patiently waiting.
For people just signing up today, the basic WARP service is free without bandwidth caps or limitations. The unlimited version of WARP Plus is available for a monthly subscription fee."

This service is meant to protect against privacy intrusion from services "in the middle" (e.g. AT&T, Comcast) only, not website or service you are actually accessing (e.g. YouTube, New York Times, Fox News).

I plan to use this "all the time" and turn on my other paid VPN for "critical use" when I'm more tolerant of slowdowns

Which was the original intent of VPNs to begin with. To protect communication, not hide your IP. IP hiding was just a side effect of the implementation. But with pretty much universal SSL use now, connections are protected by default. IP hiding is really the only reason people use VPNs.

cloudflare is not to be trusted. this is the organization that was dealing with the dnc and hillary servers.
LOL. If you don't trust Cloudflare then stay off the internet. Cloudflare is used by a whole lot of websites.

Which is a lot of websites. Since Cloudflare is used by a lot of websites whether they know it or not. For a lot of webhosting companies, Cloudflare is used by default.

I think this is the "VPN" backend used by the free Firefox extension that debut a little while ago.

Still not clear or not seeing it. I updated the app to the latest version, the notification banner for waitlist is no longer on the top but I see no verification of 10GB

Only See on the bottom:

Warp+ (Upgrade for an ever better Internet)
+1GB refer a Friend
Unlimited $4.99

Where do you confirm it's 10GB?

What does that have to do with anything?
Basically saying Cloudflare is a hypocrite.
Use your brain, if the service is free of charge, YOU are the product...
