This really should not be called unlimited. I tried Kindle unlimited for free for a month when it first came out and cancelled early because no books I was looking for were included. I would check what is included before you buy.
I actually use Kindle Unlimited for a ton of audiobooks. Usually they are either "listen for free" which means them come with the kindle unlimited book, or they are really cheap to add-on the audiobook ($1.99 is usually the price I pay for these audiobooks).
I keep an Amazon shopping list for Kindle Unlimited titles that catch my eye. Then when Amazon has these Kindle Unlimited membership deals, I grab it, borrow the Kindle Unlimited books, and buy the add-on audiobook.
Whenever you buy an Audible audiobook with cash or Audible's credit system, you keep that title, no matter if you have an Audible membership or not, it stays yours and is attached to your Amazon account (even if your Amazon account is Prime, or is not Prime). The only caveat is these are digital purchases, so you own them as much as you own online video games: you buy the access, so download your audiobooks in order to keep them forever.
If have further questions about Audible books through Kindle Unlimited, go to the subreddit specifically for Audible and post a link with any book in question. That group should help you get answers, when you get that annoying customer service bounce.

Mine recently ran out, but I purchased two 6 months subscriptions for myself and they do stack together
Thanks, I'm about to stack 2 as well. Waiting for the subs to update. It says this on the redemption page too:
"Your gift subscription will be applied to the following account: xxxxxxxxxx Change Already a Kindle Unlimited member? You can now stack this gift on top of your existing subscription or Click here to redeem your membership as a gift card."
This definitely seems suspicious - Amazon is pretty good about making the discount LARGER for longer periods. If these stack, then they have messed up and are penalizing you for longer subscriptions.
So if I currently am subscribed to KU I can get a 6 month subscription, cancel and have it start when my current KU month ends?
If this isn't for new members only, they will simply add it to the end of your current subscription. They did for me when I got free months with a Kindle purchase.
I have used it for years as an alternative to Audible. The selection is limited but it is thousands and many times the book is free and the companion. audible version is $2. The stand alone audible version- something- is listed at $18-24. Therefore if its not part of the unlimited offerings you may be able to get the audible version for far less than from audible. A caveat is you can only have 10 books at a time. The better deal for some and defined better than audible is Scribd which I also have for around $9 a month.
KU has thousands of books, more than Prime free books. Books move in and out of the catalog monthly. You can try out new genres, new authors. A lot are indie authors, some need editing, some are good, some are bad. Just dump and move on. You won 't find many big established or best selling authors here, but maybe a first of a series. Quit bashing it - this is a deal to try it out. It works for voracious readers! Most of these books are definitely not at your library.
Those that are dismissive of Kindle Unlimited are probably not using it wisely.
Kindle unlimited is great to get for a few months on occasion. Gives you the opportunity to read some good series on the platform. I don't find it to be worth it for the entire year. Especially because they have frequent deals on 1 to 3 month trials. I usually leverage those and sometimes pay for the odd month or two (paying this very month in fact).
As an example - Currently, I'm reading/listening the John Rain series by Barry Eisler on the platform. I'm constantly amazed by how good the series is compared to some other 'big name' authors. The spy-craft is practical and seems authentic. And the author uses real locations/landmarks/restaurant/coffee shops and does an excellent job describing them. He's narrated the series himself and done an amazing job at it; definitely on par with professional narrators on audible. (I typically listen to ~60 audiobooks a year, heavily relying on Audible, library, kindle sales; usually only read 'big name' established authors, so I know what I'm talking about when I say the narration is not amateurish at all). I'm on the 6th book now, and the $10 monthly price I've paid so far, has been a far better investment than the typical $5 to $15 I spend per book on audible.
The point is - there are some very good books/series on Kindle Unlimited. But be wary about taking the annual subscription - You'll eventually start reading sub-par efforts and not even realize it till much later. Better to vary your sources (library, your personal purchases, kindle sales, audible etc.). Tap into Kindle Unlimited on occasion to get the best offerings of the service, and then move on. Return a year later for a few months. This strategy will serve you well.

And surprise surprise most of the books people want aren't part of the "unlimited" package.
I would recommend people check out the audiobook selection at their local library. In a big/mid-size city it can be pretty amazing.
You can get access with your library card and then inputting it into one of the following apps:
Libby, Axis360, Hoopla
Support your local library and save some money!!

But.....ssshhhh. I wouldn't want Amazon to change this.
