Honestly, the fan doesn't run at all after the updates. I am pretty happy with Ubuntu. Boots in 15sec, turns off in 5secs. There is no bloatware either.

One more thing to add, upgrading the ram will reduce the fan noise too because there will be less writes to the SSD which is another burden on CPU.

For those of you upgrading the RAM and SSD, what do you plan to do with the original components? I wouldn't think there's much of a market for 128GB M.2 SATA SSDs. Could it somehow be re-purposed as an external USB drive? I haven't gotten this laptop yet, but if I do, I'm thinking adding another 4GB RAM would be sufficient for me (for 8GB total). So I might be looking to see if I can get the 4GB RAM from someone here who has upgraded their RAM and doesn't need it anymore.

A usb enclosure that works with the ssd drive that comes with the laptop is not expensive -maybe $12-$18 on ebay or Amazon- but the drive itself is not worth much either and it's not a lot of capacity for data storage or backups.

Next good Samaritan that opens it up for upgrade, would you care to validate the following measurements for the screws under the rubber? I got this by making one of the pics to the same scale as the laptop and then holding the laptop in front of the screen, but confirmation would be nice. I'm cutting the feet where the screws are to make it easy for the next upgrade. Anyway here are the numbers.

Looking at the laptop facing down with the hinge away from you.
- There's one screw only under the nearest rubber strip. This screw is at exactly 91mm from the left edge of the rubber. Right or wrong?

- There are three screws under the upper rubber strip. Measuring form the left they are located at 10mm, 91mm, and 261mm. Right or wrong?

Thanks if you take the time to measure them.

Did you ditch windows entirely or are dual booting?

Apparently it supports. The question for me was if it was worth it? More expensive for little gain on a non-gaming laptop.

128gb is useless except for one thing IMO, and that's a OS back up drive.

I'd set up/configure windows the way you want it on a larger drive (install pgms too), but without loading all the data you may want. Then, I'd clone the "ready to go" drive back to the 128gb and use it for backup. If desired, you can periodically install the back up drive to freshen up windows, and even modify the apps if desired, but it still gives you a catastrophic restore capability for zero extra $.

Good question. Does the feet just reattach?

16gb is coming tomorrow. Anyone in need of a 4gb ram that I'll be removing?

I'll take it. I dont need 16. 8 would do it for me.
Otherwise, is there anyone else who upgraded the ram and isn't doing anything with the 4GB ram it came with? Let me know and I'll pay shipping.

For those having fan noise issues. Go into the Services and stop and disable all 4 HP services, especially the Analytics one. Once I stop the analytics, after a few seconds, the fan stops. After disabling it, reboot and make sure it stayed disabled. This is what worked for me

Windows 10 has a "Fresh Start" feature already. It's a feature that removes 3rd party software. Its under Windows Security. (under Device Performance & Health)

So this will remove all HP drivers? If that's the case, will some functions (audio, video etc) of the laptop become disabled or distorted?

Save HP drivers and programs that you want to a USB drive: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers. Windows 10 will install drivers on its own -- you can install HP given drivers afterwards (just to play it safe if you're worried) and install whatever HP programs you want on there
As a non computer guy and just need internet and photo storage - how hard is this to do and is it necessary if I don't need it for anything important. I need a laptop, but all this chatter on here has me confused if this is a good deal or nah

Do we need to keep it for warranty?

If everything we need to be done on a computer can be done on a Chromebook, is there any advantage to getting this over that? I mainly surf webpages, music and limited word docs.
