No shit! I installed a 16GB stick (total 20GB now) and the CPU passmark jumped to 9458 (from 8020). Memory mark is now at 2794. Disk mark (original disk) and 3D got better too, but 2D dropped a little. Overall my Passmark rating is now 3617, compared to 2847 a couple hours ago. Again, all I did was to add the RAM stick. I'll do the HD tomorrow as it's pretty late now and I need to figure out the best way to dual boot.

What it comes down to is that shipping any system with 4GB of memory these days is nothing more than a scam. Like putting a 40 proof liquor inside a 86 proof "capable" bottle and letting you figure out that you will have to add extra alcohol to get the buzz you were expecting.
What was your 3D graphics score after installing the extra RAM?

OK I have used this laptop for few hours since yesterday. I gotta say the fan noise is a bit distracting. This is my first time using a cheap laptop and I just realized fans on the fancy machines make noise differently. This one seems odd. Sounds like a tiny whistle or something.
3 ways to remove fan noise:
  • Upgrade your ram.
  • Remove bloated software
  • Redo thermal paste on cpu

I am going to make this a 16gb RAM soon so I am ok there.
Someone made a list of bloatware in this thread, I am going to find it. But in the end I will end up installing some software of my own right? We can't just expect this to be a clean installation to be used for web browsing only, right? I was thinking of using this for light programming work as it's such lightweight laptop with nice keyboard and screen.

Thermal paste: We can actually do that on a laptop? It seems this laptop was manufactured a few months ago, doesn't it seem to soon for factory thermal paste to have lost its power?

Edit: I gotta say, changing the zoom % under Screen Resolution to 125% made this screen look even better. And I am loving the keyboard right now. It is less sensitive than the fancy laptops but it is still nice to type on.

Read post 494 on bloatware.

Did you try post 494?

"To Sum it up for the jet engine fan problem:
1/ go to bios and disable fan always on
2/disable the following serives:
-HP Analytics service
-HP App Helper HSA Service
-HP Network HSA Service
-HP System Info HSA Service
-Windows Search
3/go to task manager -> Startup -> an disable HpseuHostLauncher too.

That's all I did, and my fan rarely turn on watching 1080p youtube video with cpu utilization between 5% to 8%... CPU speed is mostly running at 0.95GHz"

Yes this is the post I was looking for. Thank you very much.
My fan stopped some time ago and didn't kick back in even if I still have same amount of tabs open in web browser. So it must have been one of these background apps causing the issue. Let's see.

You might want to try it the keyboard and touchpad if you are not using a separate keyboard and mouse. Those are two components you cannot upgrade, and you may not like it.

I just ran my second test with stock hardware. The only difference this time is that I have the HP apps killed and I changed the power performance to high performance.

Well... the results came worse this time. CPU on the first try was at 8068, now it's at 8020. Everything dropped except for the RAM that went form a 1532 to a 1594. The biggest setback was with the HD, it went from 3709 to 3072. My overall rating dropped from 2924 to 2847. Maybe the HP apps are there for a reason, fan noise or not.

Now I'm about to install more RAM and a new nvme HD. I'll run these tests again after that and see what happens.

What's crazy for me is that my 5 year old desktop (i7 4790k) still beats the new kids on the block with a 9711 cpu mark. Not bad for an old ma... chine?
You used PassMark version 9 right?

Somehow reminds me of my surface pro 2 i5 4300U. It's snappy as hell for regular use but the display is bulging out from its body already.

Refurbs usually go $ 180-200. Decent computer to hide somewhere then connected to a large display.

Anyway, if this takes 3200mhz ram, wouldn't that give a massive boost for iGPU preformance since that is the main RAM of the iGPU coming from 2666? 20% boost?
If your Surface is bulging, stop using it immediately! That's indicative of a serious battery issue that is a real fire hazard. There's reports on the Surface reddit that if you experience a battery issue Microsoft (mixed reports of phone help vs bringing it in store) will give you a replacement even if you're out of warranty.

Someone pointed out that this 2x8GB Corsair DDR4 RAM is on sale yesterday. It looked to be price matched to Newegg's pre-black Friday sale (which ended at midnight).

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019MRB...YDbQSRXT4N

According to the camels the price looks good. Can anyone comment as to whether this is a good choice for the RAM upgrade? Thank you

This deal will likely beat any BF laptop deal. Intentional or not, thanks Costco for the i5 upgrade!

It's only 2400mhz. Not sure in the real world if that matters, but that is why it is priced less.

I mean this deal is for a 10th gen i5 with the G4 for better internal graphics. That an 8th gen processor.

Plus I mean you can technically get a 256 SSD and a 4 GB stick of RAM for $50 which still puts this $70 ahead.

Personally I'm just throwing another 4 GB in there and that's it. If space becomes an issue later I can always upgrade or I can add more RAM
