Um if your daughter got 700 bucks laptop why would she need a new one?

Also I said slow etc... which means things will break down and quality of build will suck if use for heavy use. You would need to know to know how to solder joints, battery plug issues , screen issues, wifi not working, ssd failures etc!
Umm may be because I did not get the two I got for her? I need one and so does my son.

But looks like you're all over the map on this posting from both sides of your mouth so I will simply hop over your posts. Broken != Slow by the way.

how the heck do you guys use your laptops that you are so scared to break them. ive used tons of cheap laptops and they never just break on their own unless its something i do...... like throw it out of frustration. I feel some are just trying to justify their purchase of a more expensive unit.

in the end, for everyday use, this is a very powerful laptop for the price and why its gotten all this attention.

you have people comparing $600-800 laptops to it? lol come on. that should say enough already on how great this thing is for the price.

when the usual batches of $200-300 laptops are compared with amd a6, ryzen 3 old gen, i3 8th gen and older, then yea its laughable to even compare those in the same breath as $600+ units

Would not be an upgrade. That machine has life left. If it needs more ram or SSD, hit up macsales or ebay. If you cant do it yourself, any computer shop can install what you get for just a few $. You will have to upgrade ram on this.
Cool, thanks man! I appreciate the input--very helpful.

I always use a usb wireless mouse that cost less than ten bucks and don't have to go near the touchpad. Had been typing on the keyboard and I didn't notice anything annoying then again I'm not pounding out fifty thousand words novels every time I use a lappy, I'm just an average user.

Oh and still luving this beautiful looking $280 lappy.

Just bit more, but has touch screen, much larger SSD and double memory. Not sure if upgraded and has I3. However, most of us would be better served not having to buy and install memory and SSD to reach these specs. Touch screen is good too. I ordered other $280 costco, but might return for this one. What do folks think?
There is another good deal on Costco worth to take a look.

This is Inspirons 5000 series, which is much better than 3000 series.

Bought both $279.99 HP and this $399.99 Dell, both give excellent values given the price. Couple things I like better in this Dell one:
* way better built quality
* 2-in-1 touchscreen (comes handy once a while)
* fingerprint sensor (one touch to login)
* USB-C power charging and display capability
* support both M.2 and 2.5" (according to Dell website)
* better touchpad
* better headset audio quality
* noticeably better video quality than HP one (more detail and dynamic), not sure if it's due to graphic card or display
* fan runs quieter

Things better in HP:
* $120 cheaper
* lighter (3.24 vs 3.81)
* better CPU processing power (haven't notice the difference for my normal usage)

Both are good laptops. I think this dell one is worth $120 extra, if you find useful of those additional features.

No shit! I installed a 16GB stick (total 20GB now) and the CPU passmark jumped to 9458 (from 8020). Memory mark is now at 2794. Disk mark (original disk) and 3D got better too, but 2D dropped a little. Overall my Passmark rating is now 3617, compared to 2847 a couple hours ago. Again, all I did was to add the RAM stick. I'll do the HD tomorrow as it's pretty late now and I need to figure out the best way to dual boot.

What it comes down to is that shipping any system with 4GB of memory these days is nothing more than a scam. Like putting a 40 proof liquor inside a 86 proof "capable" bottle and letting you figure out that you will have to add extra alcohol to get the buzz you were expecting.

I am pretty sure that is because part of your RAM ( 4 + 4) is running dual channel while the 12 GB remains single channel. I remember I saw a video from Bob of All Trades which showed how the Overpowered laptops gained an immense performance boost by going dual channel !

Yeah but know what you are getting into. The keyboard is meh and touchpad sucks. Also the fan noise is bad.

I read in one of the post that the fan noise goes away after a fresh install . Did you try that ?

Which RAM are you guys upgrading into?

https://www.newegg.com/g-skill-16...6820232309

I'm thinking of this one. DDR4 3000MHz CL16 1.2V for $68.99. [Edit: 8GBx2]
Any other recommendations?

I'll be using this as a dedicated streaming device to my TV through HDMI.

8GB of RAM should be plenty so I'll keep an eye out for another 4GB stick on eBay for cheap.

Really nice machine for under $300

My suggestion to folks buying this unit would be to get RAM upgraded ASAP, otherwise windows will use your precious SSD real estate.

SSD's have a big limitation- it can write in small 'pages' 2K to 16K, but it can only erase 128 to 256 pages in a 'block'.

It's like it can write to a 2yd x10yd patch on a football field, but can delete only a full playing field.

So even it some data is erased, it stays in place and remains orphaned, until the SSD driver copies relevant data from block to another clear 'block', and erases the original block to free up space. Chunk at a time.

This means, unbeknownst to user, the SSD never sleeps, it keeps managing storage when nothing is really happening. This consumes read-write cycles, and by 3rd year (for DRAM less drive) or 5th year you could be risking drive degradation. Those are warranty periods as well for these drives.

That means, all that cycling, with windows taking over SSD to make up for RAM, and a small 128GB size, this drive will degrade sooner.

Unlike HDD days where OS knows data location in ExFat or whatever, the OS has no idea where the physical data really is. Only the SSD driver knows where it is.

That is why SSD manufacturer is important- drivers are proprietary.

Stay away from drives that look short like 120GB, 240GB, 480GB. These are DRAMless and allocate the 8, or 16, or 32 GB for that SSD driver function. These usually wear faster and have 3 yr vs 5yr warranty.

just ordered through Google Shopping. In addition to the $20 discount, they also pay for the e-waste fee. That saved me $5. I only need to find out if the additional 2 years of warranty for paying with the Costco Visa still applies through portal purchases. I will call after it ships
