I think the general consensus regarding the fan is a little off the mark. We perceive the fan to be loud and obnoxious because of its "whistling" quality, but I'm 99% sure the whistling is not caused by the fan, but rather the design of the exhaust vent. If you take a look at the exhaust vent, you can see that two of the ports are constricted by additional plastic material (see attached). I would bet money that the two smaller exhaust holes are responsible for the whistling. When I cover them up with a credit card, the whistling goes away. I haven't disassembled my laptop yet, but when I do, I'm going to find some way to plug/block the undersized ports. I expect this will take care of the whistling.

I've also successfully applied a -100mv undervolt and capped the turbo speeds on battery. This seems to have helped with the fans a little bit, but I think whatever algorithm controls the fans isn't allowing them to ramp down fully when the CPU idles again after a heavy load. Then again, I am still running the stock OS image, so there could just be a bunch of crap running in the background. I'll do a clean install after I (hopefully) pickup a larger SSD during BF sales.
Those are the clips that hold the bottom together. you can see them in jackts pictures https://imgur.com/a/zXufcNv

Did you undervolt both CPU and CPU cache -100mV?

RST is AHCI I believe . I did this in my Yoga 720 and then again on my Dell G5. This laptop is for wife and son who really are not much into Linux Smilie !

Also were you able to install your Trackpad drivers after a fresh install ? For me it keeps saying the 'Windows Version is not supported'. Please post a link to the driver you used if you can .
I had many issues with the new SSD and clean install as well. Unfortunately, I had to create restore media from original drive and then do a recovery/ install in the larger drive. The same crap is installed but at least the drivers/features all work.

For me the install was smooth. I pre downloaded the wifi drivers did an offline install and let windows update take care of the rest. The only missing piece is the touchpad driver.

That was a smart move, I didn't do that and had to use another laptop to download the drivers. In the past I've never had a problem and the built-in drivers was enough to get them going. I think the new windows update this month is possibly too new for the drivers?? Just a guess there

no my friend, i dont worry about the sound, or that the fan is running, the problem is tye CPU trottles IMMEDIATELY even in moderate load.. so you are going to use your laptop almost 90% of the time at half speed max 2GHz

that is the issue, not proper cooling for the i5, mine is going back F that

good luck to all ya, im out

If throttling under load was really that big of an issue, wouldn't it be evident with low CPUMark scores?

I don't really care what frequency the CPU is running at as long as it yields good performance.

Undervolting reduced the throttling . Repasting brought my temps down. Give it a shot before you return it !

If I want to return the laptop to Costco, is there a simple way to wipe all the data I put on it? Like my account, WiFi and stuff like that.

Because some crybaby couldn't order one online and then reported the deal as expired. Then the mods blindly moved it here.

The deal is alive until 11/21 or until the last remaining B&M unit gets sold.

Decided to return this in favor of the $400 Dell convertible laptop at Costco. The build quality (specifically the trackpad, which I will be using daily) was the deciding factor, along the superior build quality with the ability of the touch screen on the Dell.
This?

4GB addition to the hp was $12, and i have no other issue with anything else.

so 1000+ weaker passmark, not sure on how the battery life compares, touchscreen 2-in-1, and better build for $110 more. Really the deciding factor there was touchscreen i believe. There are surprisingly a lot of people who reallly want touchscreen

This.

I had to report to mods to move it back. Report and see if they oblige again. I have done it once already and don't want to do it again.

I have the same issue with the missing touchpad driver. I'm hoping a new driver will be available soon. I did not create a backup and did a fresh install with the 1909 build.
