LTE bands supported: 1,2,3,4,5,8,12,14,17,30,66

Clearly, it works fully with AT&T, Cricket, and other AT&T MVNOs. As long as you do not power on the phone with included SIM, it should activate just fine on any AT&T MVNO.

This lacks band 13 - which is Verizon's 4G LTE backbone - so it almost certainly will not work with Verizon or Verizon MVNOs.

This lacks bands 25, 26, and 41, so it almost certainly will not work with Sprint.

It does have main TMO LTE bands (2,4,12), so it should technically work with TMO or a TMO MVNO, but activation outside of AT&T or an AT&T MVNO will almost certainly require 6 months of AT&T service before it can be unlocked for that purpose. Still, if you have TMO and pick up this phone, please try and let us all know!

I use this phone on wifi, bought it for $40 in September ( https://slickdeals.net/f/13353541-at-t-pre-paid-motorola-moto-e5-play-with-16gb-memory-prepaid-cell-phone-39-99-best-buy-free-shipping). Most unlockers on eBay have a disclaimer that it can't be unlocked unless the 6 months of prepaid usage on AT&T were fulfilled. The only ebayer that didn't have that disclaimer refunded my money ($14) when he wasn't able to unlock it in a week.

Updated the Wiki. This model is the XT1921-2.

Short version:

It will work with AT&T or an AT&T MVNO (such as Cricket) out of the box as long as you don't turn it on with the included SIM installed.

It can technically work with TMO, but you may not be able to activate without 6 months of AT&T service.

It almost certainly will not work with Verizon or Sprint, as it lacks the major LTE bands those carriers use.

It should be bootloader unlockable and rootable, per XDA.

I need a cheap phone just to use wirelessly at home. I take it this would work fine? Or do you have to activate it to get the 29.99 price?

I see the option to activate later. What does that mean? If I buy it for 29.99, how they going to know if I don't activate it later but just use it wirelessly?

If you're talking about just using it on wifi, yes just take out the included sim card before starting/setting up the phone. That is their slightly obtuse terminology for pricing WITH activation or pricing WITHOUT. Usually, the pricing is higher without. In fact I just bought this phone a week ago at $59.99 from best buy for a family member without activation (termed activate later) as we had to port their number at a corporate AT&T store separately as there was some confusion with porting from Cricket despite being wholly owned by At&t.

Caveat is that these phones are locked to At&t service and I believe it requires 6 months of service before they will oblige to give you an unlock code in order to move service to Tmobile. I *believe* their phones will work fine with Cricket and other att MVNOs while locked, but I can't be certain and go at your own risk regarding that.

Final price. You either activate the new sim card in the phone or use an already working sim from att. Or I guess you use it only on wifi without phone service like an earlier poster mentioned.

Would love to hear the results if anyone tried putting an activated cricket sim in an "activate later" phone.
