FWIW, I bought this camera, not on sale, for surveillance purposes outdoors and indoor. Mind you im on the basic package so I didn't have any features such as 24/7 monitoring, etc. I like the magnetic swivel mounts on these. The resolution is also fantastic, has a good wide angle, and it can pick up pretty good audio.

However, I do not like that there is a delay of video capturing triggered by motion. There is at least a 2 second delay to these to start capturing. If the object in video is moving at a fast speed or turns a corner outside of the viewing angle, chances are that the Arlo will not capture the "moment" of things happening. The Arlo does pick up motion pretty well, so if you have a long hallway or driveway, it'll detect motion and start recording once the target is in your hallway, not entering. For that reason, I'm returning and looking for an installer to install a NVR/PoE system.
Hi CrimsonScent and others

FYI - the ability to capture license plates during the day so that you're able read them depends on how many effective pixels you can get on the license plate. While higher resolution is better for this - remember it is effective pixels on target.

The 4K cameras from Arlo have very wide FOVs, which reduces the "range" - and with compression to reduce cloud storage and bandwidth you get less effective pixels.

For a better idea of how FOV camera resolution affects the theoretical ID distance ( and also license plate reading ability ) see the ID distance chart in

Also - night time license plate capture is challenging due to the reflective nature of plates - so you will need to custom tune the camera to just capture plates to read. ( see ipcamtalk lpr section for more info on this )
I don't know about range, but main difference is it doesn't have built-in siren and cannot connect Arlo Pro 3 cameras. The small base station is either 3000 or 3500 model. See KB article here: https://kb.arlo.com/000062284/Wha...se-station

No issue with iOS app for more than 2 year.
Bull. Been using the iOS app for several years with Arlo Q and it randomly stops working. As of now, Geo Fencing is not working correctly. Started a couple weeks ago. Again. On an off for the past few months. If it's not the App, it was iOS 13 or something with the service being down. HOWEVER, for the most part, no issues.

Does it work with HomeKit?
Nope. Only the super new, expensive ones do.

This is incorrect. I currently have 5 arlo pro (first gen pro) cameras all connected to homekit. I also have an arlo baby cam connected to homekit.

The same reason I returned it last year.

So what do you recommend instead?

Arlo software is absolute garbage. The cameras are great for the price, but non working software makes it basically pointless.

Plenty of known issues that made it a deal breaker for me. 3 sets and several hours with tech support about them denying clearly known and reported issues and I returnee it for a Nest and never looked back.

"Smart" notifications are anything but. You'll run into a glitch where you'll get notifications for everything, no matter what you set for filters.

Despite having sensitivity adjustments on motion detection and customization to block our detection in certain areas... none of it works; followed every instruction to the letter from them too. You either get motion detection for every car that passes and your battery drains in a week or you get no detection. I found the break point and one tick up or down on sensitivity yields one or the other.

I'm sure there are some situations where this works out... eg: works well in my backyard where there's nornally no motion, but don't say I didn't warn you.

This is, no exaggeration, THE BUGGIEST software I've dealt with in my life, for anything I've ever used. I never had a more frustrating experience over 3 returns/replacements. Complete waste of time. There's a reason Nest is more expensive.

Please be aware this Costco version has an older base station without a siren or USB. For $20 more there is an Amazon option that is the better value.
