Many people use this to test their configurations so that their devices are hidden and not accessible. You can verify if your IoT devices are exposed/accessible or not.

Penetration testers, security professionals, academic researchers and law enforcement agencies are the primary users of Shodan. Most hackers will use botnets that can do the same thing without being detected. So this really is more for exposing security holes, not exploiting them.

I used shodan about 2 years ago to help inform my clients that they were running vulnerable software. Cost me $5 because the results I needed were past page 2.

With this deal I guess I'll be running a follow up!
