Can SOMEONE who actually owns this tell me if it's any better than the other VR headsets that are cheaper?
We use a number of different headsets for work. (Vive Pro, Rift S, Cosmos, Samsung Odyssey) The resolution on the Reverb is higher than anything else (widely) available. It's the only one that has allowed me to feel fully immersed and focus on what I'm looking at, and not be distracted by pixels/screen door. I love the lightweight form factor - everything else is clunky in comparison.
That said there are a few reasons they aren't popular -
- They had a horrendous launch, and early units had some issues.
- Inside-out tracking is 1st gen; not as good as Rift S, but most people think it's fine.
- Reliance on Windows Mixed Reality as a platform. Updates happen through Windows. If they break something in an update (and they do) you are at the mercy of Microsoft waiting for a fix, or figuring out how to roll back. Though there are a couple people from the WMR team active on Reddit and they are pretty good about sharing updates/information.
For me the visual clarity is the most important factor but it comes down to preference/priorities. Serious gamers probably want the rock solid sensor-tracking on the Vive/Index. You'll get people with opinions on OLED vs LCD. They all have trade-offs, the Reverb might require a little more TLC. It also needs a super beefy GPU.
At this price or below you could consider the Rift S (personally I am anti-Oculus/Facebook) - or the Samsung Odyssey at the current $229 price would be a great option to try VR with less of a $ commitment.
Spend some time in the WMR forum on Reddit and you should find some good info there.

I've NEVER seen it in the discussions on the "Best VR Headsets" list in the JoinUsInVR Steam Group. And I'm guessing it's for good reasons.

Reach out to me in a PM, or in the Steam Group if you'd like to give your input on that. Thanks!
