I assume he is talking about the i3 s340 at Walmart for $279. A blanket "it's faster" is misleading. The i3 8145u is slightly faster in single or dual core operation but much slower in multicore (8 threads). As well as the 3500u is by far the better gpu. I mean there are trade offs like anything else.
Honestly amazing that this isn't a good deal at $299.
In the past 6 months bang for buck in the $200-$400 range has skyrocketed like crazy.
Lenovo sure has terrible laptop model naming. I searched google and found IdeaPad S145 models with intel cpus, amd A-series cpus, and Ryzen cpus.

This is the walmart version but in black. Anyone know if it come with ips display?
not sure about IPS
but the walmart version has a metal body, higher build quality since it is the pavillion line, also the RAM is expandable up to 16 rather than just 12.

To note, this isn't the same version as the walmart one. This one's the newer SKU and has a newer AMD processor, and potentially is different in other ways that aren't listed (because it seems both walmart and staples are kinda crap for listing specs)
Do you know that for fact or guessing based on price/not being listed in the specs? I ask because after contacting officemax corporate, my local officemax store, lenovo sales and levovo technical support I've yet to get an actual answer.

There's no IPS version of this laptop. It's been out in EU and Asia for awhile. Only TN version

It is a good deal but the walmart version is better imo. This one has a little faster cpu while walmart's has a better screen. I'll take an ips screen over .1 ghz clock speed any day.
I'm not going to get this. But this is a great deal for the people in the market for a laptop who took advantage of the $40 Office Depot recycling throughout November.
The clock speed doesn't really tell you much. The 3500u is 12nm Zen+, and it's about a +10% performance boost over the 14nm Zen 2500u. If you look at benchmarks it's actually comparable to a 2700u.
I'm with you on the screen though. Give me these specs + IPS at this price and I'm in instantly. Extra battery life would be a bonus, but I can deal.
Also note that AMD is expected to announce 7nm (!) Zen 2 mobile CPUs in January, for what it's worth.
