How to get family from LAX to Anaheim? (no OT)

39,439 5,562 December 4, 2019 at 05:11 AM
I have a trade show in Anaheim CA every February - the family has flown over once before at the end of it to do the whole Disney thing, and they are doing it again this year however we will have +2 toddlers in tow this time.

Last time I had a company rental and brought over a carseat (booster) ahead of time just to make travel simpler for them (then it was DW and (2) kids ~ 7 and 3 yo). Next year it will be (6) of them - DW, 10 and 6 yo, and (2) near 2 yo. MIL will be coming along mainly to help but also it won't be that much more expensive (you can't fly with 2 lap infants, so we'd have to buy an extra seat anyway).

Then comes the issue as to how I get them from LAX to Anaheim. Uber/Lyft seem pretty much no go because of the carseat situation. I *could* rent another car (really it would need to be at least an 8 seater SUV/van), but I'd have to keep AND park it after the show, which would be all on my dime and also fairly expensive. I'd also have to think about the carseat situation (the toddlers are in convertible seats which are bulkier, heavier, and I don't have spares I can bring ahead of time).

Are there any shuttles that might make this route? We aren't staying on property if that makes a difference.

You may be able to rent a van at LAX and return at SNA or a local rental place without a one-way fee.

I'd definitely check out whether your hotel actually charges for parking. I don't think that's ubiquitous in LA yet. Having a vehicle in LA makes it a lot easier to get around.

Have you looked into flying into SNA instead? Much more friendly airport. LAX in a clusterfark these days, horrible traffic around the loop, etc. At SNA, you'd be only a few minutes from Anaheim.

You might check prices on a whole van from places like Supershuttle for the trip, too.

On the whole, I'd bet that renting would be the least hassle, and you could drive to the beach, Balboa Island, etc.

I never knew the code for John Wayne Airport, Orange County (SNA)

I've always thought of it as "John Wayne" laugh out loud

I've been doing this show for 8-10 years now, all the hotels in that area (Disney) charge for parking and it's like $30+/night! That's usually why I don't rent a car when going there, pay to rent, pay to park for it just sitting there, when an Uber either way to LAX is <$100 (rates can vary widely).

I have looked into SNA however it doesn't have the flight availability that LAX does, obviously, which also ultimately means if you get delayed/etc, it's harder to redirect as well (it's February after all).

IS there more shuttle availability from SNA? I can see it being closer, uber/etc would be cheaper, but the transportation problem still exists.

If you don't get an answer here, you could try on the DIS boards.

Scroll down and there is a Disneyland section with sub-forums.

Good call on the supershuttle. Random reasonable dates for 6 people indicate a one way trip would be $111 (direct, it's $5 less if you don't mind sharing the ride). We'd still have to provide the carseats though.

Meanwhile a minivan for the same period of time would be $400 or so (7 passenger, pretty light considering luggage), plus gas and parking will make it closer to $500+.

Or you can do one day rental. Shuttle everyone to the hotel and then return the car rideshare your way back to the hotel.

Or just suck it up and pay the $30 parking fee so you have the flexibility to drive around if the group wish to split up and do something or grab food run
