I've always been under the impression Sony's OLED TVs are more dependable and have slightly upgraded tech vs the LG line. Anyone own a Sony OLED or know more info to confirm or deny this?

Great tv but no HDMI 2.1 like the LG C9/E9.

I've always been under the impression that Sony just buys their OLED panels from LG

Yes this is true. LG makes all of the OLED panels in the US. That being said, what you do with that panel is the difference maker. The processing is dependent on the tech by the company. Even LG B9 with the A7 processor vs LG C9 with the A9 processor are different TVs because of the tech differences even though they are the same panel and the same manufacturer.

The C9 is a really strong TV this year and is the only TV supporting HDMI 2.1 (and on all 4 ports even!) which makes it a lot more future proof compared to the Sony TVs. Where the Sony shines is in their picture processing and their motion processing is still considered the reference standard at the moment when it comes to OLED TVs. The C9s have improved on that front but the Sony TVs handle motion better in general.

All that being said, buying a similar sized OLED for $1K more is tough to swallow this year given the strengths of the C9 series from LG.

I'd wait.
I suspect 2020 Sony OLED will beat 2020 LG.

Sony OLEDs are good for watching movies and they have better sound than the LGs. The problem the Sony TVs have is they have considerably higher input lag, so they're not very good for things like gaming. LG OLEDs are good all around. I have an E8, but almost got the Sony A8F. After almost a year, no regrets getting the LG.

How do you buy a new tv so often? What do you do with old one that is still good?
