It definitely depends on the kid and their interests. My son loves things like this. I've found it goes better if we use it together. I'll just say I think age 8 tops on this. He's ten now so getting him a rasberry pi this year and going into it with project ideas that will specifically appeal to him. Kano has great "family projects" for younger kids.

Totally agree with this! Lots of kids already using scratch at school. There's some great basic programming project books on amazon if your kid already has access to a computer and imo you want to help them. Even python for kids.
Yeah, I don't want to say boy vs girl because it truly depends on the individual. I'm a mom and a programmer...something similar from radio shack around age eight is how I got into it. It was actually a gift to my brother he tossed aside. Just a basic hello world, clock program and went from there. I went into it with the hope of making my own video games which I was really bad at tbh. Probably every kid goes into it with that end goal.

It ended up on her shelf, never to be touched again. She likes to draw ponies and do artistic things. I almost feel like the system is telling me that is bad for my daughter. My wife told me she would never have played with that when she was a kid and it would have been the equivalent to a pair of socks as a gift.
I guess this push to get girls to become coders is a big financial boom for many of these companies marketing toys to parents.
