Why are these things so expensive? A decent FLIR one costs $500 and above.

From the Amazon reviews it sounds like their software sucks. Considered getting one but now I'm having second thoughts.

Wonder if there are still privacy concerns w the current software, like the first few 'helpful' Amz reviews state.

I've had one for 5? years now and so for what it's worth, it doesn't suck at all. In fact I really like it more for features that Flir doesn't have like the real-time pin-pointing of hottest/coldest spots. Don't get me wrong, the Flir's MSX image overlay is really cool but from a practical perspective in all of my usage (electronics, home improvement, auto repair) I prefer the Seek. I have this microUSB version of the Seek and use a little USB-C OTG adapter for my newer Android devices.

BTW, this is what people use to get PIN numbers after you go through the grocery outlet. The heat from your fingers are displayed on the number pad.

I've been following seek thermal, and thinking about getting the compact PRO (micro-USB is at $270), but haven't been able to justify pulling the trigger.

It seems this compares favorably to FLIR, in terms of resolution. Better thermal image detail, but purely thermal imagery rather than FLIR's overlay of thermal over hi-res optical images. Reviews seem very mixed on seek's software, and this device relies on the app to be usable.

The list of supported devices, outside of iOS, is somewhat limited, but I see the Pixel line is on there now:
https://www.thermal.com/supported.html

There is a guy who developed open source software to use the seek thermal camera:
https://www.eevblog.com/forum/the...pberry-pi/
https://github.com/maartenvds/libseek-thermal

read through the amazon reviews -- apart from the sw complaints, there's also some reliability concerns from some reviewers. On the other hand, the thermal image examples do seem pretty good.

The main reviews I've seen are:
https://thermalimagingcamerarevie...k-compact/
https://www.thermalcameras.guide/...martphone/

Also, there are various youtube reviews that show comparisons

Current user here.

The Micro USB version is quite a good deal because you can get a USB-OTG supported USB-C to Micro USB adapter to use it on your newer phones. Works perfect for me. Cannot speak for Apple side but I kind of think it would be a similar situation. (Edited: wrong item link was provided so removed)

Function wise, it works just as good as FLIR. One thing to notice is that FLIR has the feature to add a layer of edge frame image on top of IR imaging, so it is much easier to reference IR imaging to eye sight image, because in IR image you don't usually see the lines and corners seen on objects you are inspecting. For me there's no problem so I rather unlike the FLIR's feature. But I would recommend people unfamiliar with IR imaging to get FLIR because of this.

Besides that, Seek works just as good as FLIR. Spec wise it has slightly better resolution compared to similar product. But it does not really makes a huge difference in usage.

So I would say the biggest advantage here is the price and more compact size. Would recommend this to friends and family.

The top amazon review says to just go get HTI-19 which costs like $560. Is that just a crock of crap?

Note that some of these adapters don't work well so check reviews first.)

Totally depends on your usage though, but for my humble opinion if you only use this kind of device occasionally and mostly for home or casual use, I don't see any real benefit from getting something better than this or similar FLIR device.
