Smart Watch as a phone

699 234 December 8, 2019 at 06:51 AM
Hope this is the right forum for this. Smilie
If not please direct me.

I'm considering, replacing my smart phone with a smart watch, and would like to get feedback from people that use their smart watch as a daily phone option. What are the pros and what are the cons. Which brands and models are better. Which are the best value for the money. My main uses for the watch will be calling, GPS/Navigation and tethering.
For the rest of my needs I'm thinking of getting a tablet around 10" and use that with a tethering option should I need data while I have no WiFi access.

Everyone will appreciate hearing all of your phone calls, so there's that.

Thank you also. This was actually part of my question. My intent was of course to use this with some bluetooth headphones or an ear piece, which I assumed people who went this route would do and be able to report pros and cons of this route. However, since bluetooth pieces are already used with conventional phones it seems like this part of the equation should be OK. Unless the watch is just to small to do everything well.

Anyway, would like to hear all experiences, as it will definitely help.

You ever see those twits on speaker phone or with a BT earpiece in out in public? Do you really need to join their ranks?

What are you trying to accomplish by doing this?

I find that 99% of the time I use my phone for the following things
1. Read/study
2. Make phone calls
3. send SMS
4. GPS navigation
5. Listen to music and maybe music on Youtube

Since my primary use turns out to be reading I was hoping to replace the 6.x screen size of my phone with a 10 screen of a tablet to accomplish that, and then have the smaller smartwatch on hand for the times that I do items 2 - 5. This way I will not need to lug 2 large devices around. And if my tablet needs network access and WiFi is not available I can just tether off my smartwatch.

That's the idea

Is the smart watch you're looking at even capable of tethering?

Did you even read the link I gave you?

Excellent question. It only lasts 8 hours per charge. So, you gotta figure tethering will drain the battery and be very slow. With electronics today the battery will charge to only 5 hours and be dead within months.

That was one of my original questions in the OP. Whether smartwatches can replace the smart phones completely or not. Small screen notwithstanding. Smilie

I was looking for recommendations for Brand and model numbers for this exact purpose.
In additional to Apple and Samsung there appear to be a sea of Chinese brand options which may be great deals and maybe not. I was hoping to find someone here with experience in this area and get their impressions.

The article seems to suggest that battery wise we are not quite there yet.

So it sounds like you tried it and it didn't work so well. So you are recommending against it at least for now?

Get a tablet with a sim card and use that number you will probably be the best solution but it seems the companies both android and apple dont want to support that solution.

This is a great suggestion and I also thought of it. One drawback here would be that the tablet has to come with me at all times. So I'm loosing the portability and compactness of a watch. Granted it saves me a wad of cash as I would not need to buy a smart watch. Smilie

I'm not in the Apple ecosystem, but are there no other players besides Samsung? For example some Chinese brands like Teclast along with others I can't remember now. Big Grin

Also my last 2 smartphones have been ASUS and I'm very happy with both. Don't they still make a tablet?
