Seems like everything on JBL went on sale but these. They finally dropped the price on these.

Speakers are one of the most subjective items possible, and I won't dispute the fact that KEF and PSB make some very nice speakers. I don't have any first hand experience with Monitor so I won't comment. Everyone's priorities are different so taking those (refurbished, by the way) KEF's as an example, those speakers are mini towers, with inferior bass output capability, and completely different voicing that may or may not be preferable to the user. The finish quality is most likely better, and they are arguably more attractive or at least more conventional in their appearance. But if you hook those speakers up in the same room, same source material, and do an A to B test, I can tell you right off there will not be a clear cut victory to the KEFs as you are saying. I don't know which would win but it is not a no-brainer type of situation.

Where you really lose me is by dismissing these just because they are JBL's. It's an ignorant position and stinks of brand loyalty over understanding and judging an individual product. JBL makes a lot of mass market stuff that is not particularly well designed or of any special quality. They also own an extensive amount of technology and used to have some of the very best speaker designers in the industry, one team of which developed this line. Throughout the past 30 years JBL has commonly had several lines in production at any given time, sometimes they have all been great, sometimes they have all been rather bad. Sometimes there are some very nice gems/values in the lineup. There are current production speakers with JBL labels on them that are completely beyond anything KEF or PSB offers. There are also crap entry level JBL's that sell for $50.

You can argue using brand names all you want but based upon real world user feedback, which includes the audiophiles and industry folks you admire, this particular lineup is a very good performing one from JBL. The value to performance ratio is very good for the money, albeit with questionable styling and average at best finish quality. You can say there may be other options in the same price brackets that might be preferred by someone, but it's totally unreasonable to say they are completely outclassed. It's simply not true.

SD is also actually a very good forum for audio/electronics advice for people that prioritize value for a given price range. You tend to see people posting feedback and info because they know the products being discussed. Not because they read a spec list or forum post.

Every point you make just digs your stubborn hole of wrongness deeper. So you are now using KEF's high end technology trickle down as an advantage vs. JBL? Really? Are you sure that's a sound argument?

If you had any idea the level of IP, technology, and development expertise that JBL has not only from its own history, but now as part of the Harmon group, you would realize how utterly stupid it makes you look to try and state that as an advantage KEF has over JBL.

And you are so hung up on the +/-6db frequency response spec but have you actually looked at frequency response plots from KEF speakers, or from the actual JBL's we are talking about? If flat response is really a priority to you KEF is a very poor choice to use as being better. They're actually quite terrible in that respect, many of their speakers have much less uniform response than these "trashy" JBL's.

At this point your arguments are so utterly ridiculous the only thing I can come up with is your real intention is to shill that ebay link. I hope you got a good deal when you bought the SD account.

When was that? I just realized these are $320 EACH which makes it really hard to justify considering I only paid $130 for each of my 530s. I'll just use the difference towards a nice sub Cool

anyone owned both 590s and 580s?
any difference other than the bass and size?
mids, treble sound the same?

i use a subwoofer, so bass isnt as important
just trying to decide between both before sale goes out
580 is cheaper and not gigantic like the 590
