I ordered R3 for $249 then R5 was $349 and now considering return to change for R5. I'll plan to use it for basic tasks but have doubts about battery life. How much is the difference in battery life in ms office and internet browsing?
Same TDP and battery capacity and screen in both so not much different

Are you running in Silent vs Basic mode? It is FN+F5 (looks like a speedometer). It should help with the cooling. Ram won't fix poor cooling or heating
it was set to the way it came. i assume that was "silent"...because when i hit FN+F5, i saw popup that showed "basic mode". that means i just changed it to "basic mode"? what is the difference is these 2 settings?

Aaargh, this deal is really giving me heartburn - it's above my "impulse-buy" price, and there are a both a lot of pros and a few cons:

Cons:
- single-channel single-slot memory
- dim screen
- cheap wi-fi

Pros:
- upgradable memory is a big positive
- upgradable storage and *2* SSD slots
- 1080p and IPS
- Vega 8 and 4-core-8-thread are nice-to-have
- replaceable battery
- wifi looks easy to upgrade - replace with Intel 7260 which has same form factor & same antenna connector location, for $20 on NewEgg.

I'm in the same boat. 10% WA sales tax isn't making it any easier. Guess I'll see if it drops any more before Christmas (or after).

Got the Ryzen5 version in the mail at lunch, immediately installed linux on it (Zorin OS 15)
Runs great, looks great!
I'll be adding a 16gb stick, update the wifi card to a 9560 (have an extra one) and add a 2nd cheap ssd drive (because I can)

Great little laptop for 299

Thanks OP for posting this deal!

The "default" is Silent Mode.
There is a small description in the wiki
"Fn+ F5 changes between Basic mode and Silent mode fan speed. This does have a small difference on multicore cpu benchmarks. Maybe also battery life when on battery? Also you can tell which mode you are in by looking at the led light on the power button: solid is basic mode, slow blinking is silent mode."

In my experience, when on Silent Mode, the fan is kept off. This keeps the laptop quiet, but then the laptop will heat up. When the laptop heats up, the performance is throttled and slowed down.

I also swapped the factory wireless card for a Intel wifi 6 2x2 mimo AX200 m.2 2330 card (plug and play no drivers were needed to be installed it just worked after swapping)and this thing flies!

Do you mean you have a 9260 wireless card? The 9560 will only work with Intel processors, as it uses some stuff on board the CPU.

I installed Ryzen Master software but it says CPU not supported. I think the Ryzen master also messed up my thing and prevent it from rebooting properly. The problem went away after uninstalling ryzen master software.

Which ryzen controller software from amd site are you talking about? i did a complete windows reinstall on mine
Yup! AMD Ryzen Master does not support mobile APUs.

Get Ryzen Controller from here:

https://gitlab.com/ryzen-controller-team/ryzen-controller/-/releases

And monitor the changes using AMD uProf:

In theory yes. Also less heat.
