this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

Would updating bios help? It looks like a complex install, does anyone know if there is a way to just toss it on a usb and install from usb (not formatting it)?
You don't have to format your USB stick if it's already FAT32-formatted (FAT16 or FAT12 might work too). Just put the EFI shell and the BIOS update tools on there. I haven't personally tried to update using the EFI program (I did it using the Windows program), so I can't predict how it'd work, but the tools are there so it should be possible.

Do you have or know of a good tutorial for moving the OS to the nvme drive, or is it just a matter of doing a clean Windows install on the new nvme drive?
Google "Macrium Reflect Free".

I clean reinstalled windows because I thought something messed up when I tried to use radeon controller to up the max TDP. After it finished, I couldn't find the THX color profile in when you right click desktop and select display settings. I don't think it makes a huge difference but can someone share that color profile?

The FN+f5 button also stopped working. I'm not sure which driver I need to install to make that work again? I have both the user supplied drivers and the official motile drivers and I can't find the drive for the key mapping.

Does anyone know how to turn the fan off?
after you clean install your window and install the amd drivers, you should still have the fn+f5 working even if you can't see the indication on the lcd. look at the led on the power button. solid bright is basic mode. press fn+f5 again switch to silent mode and now the power button led does a slow blinking between bright and dim.

Think i just ran into a potential deal breaker here:

Connected to my LG 24UD58 and i am getting the display keep flicking very intermittenly and also blanking out like the signal is unstable. i've tried full rgb and 4:4:4 ycrb signal and still doing the same thing. using the latest amd chipset and radeon from amd site. Not sure what else i can do at this point.

even switching down l to 1980x1080p to the external monitor doesn't fix this problem. tried another cable still same. both these cables work on another 4k monitor as well as when i use another laptop

Edit: nevermind. Problem solved. another software was misbehaving. had to change a few setting on it.

I really need to upgrade the memory . this 8gb ram is just not enough after the vega already stole 2gb...lol..

I'm looking at grabbing a low end laptop with a dedicated graphics card for doing some very lightweight modeling and drafting with Fusion 360. It's not going to be very demanding. Would there be a drastic difference in this laptops performance compared to the Ryzen 3 / Vega 3 of the $219 model for 25% less?

So far so good! I'll be looking out for subtle side effects such as power management changes (e.g. defaulting to Basic Mode).

I just flashed the EC. It must be done from an EFI shell, but Motile's BIOS/UEFI does not seem to come with one (correct me if I'm wrong). So I downloaded Intel's open source shell from the TianoCore UDK/EDK2 project. You're gonna need a USB stick that you're willing to wipe. Here's how to create a bootable USB stick with the EFI shell:
I noticed a couple of issues after updating the EC FW:
1. The fan now always spins, and is more aggressive in fan speed for the same temp
2. I can no longer adjust the keyboard backlight (I can't turn it off, and I can't reduce the backlight strength)

I would definitely not update the EC FW from 1.00--also, I noticed that this laptop has issues with lid open/close detection; it doesn't go to sleep when the lid is closed, and doesn't even shut off the display; and when waking from sleep, I typically have to press the power button.

Thanks for being the guinea pig. Let me know if we can somehow save our old bios and ec for you to reflash. otherwise i guess time to return that back to walmart and get another one.

The question, if you now went for the black one, is how soon you'd start seeing the battle scars on the anodized aluminum finish Wink

I can confirm that the keyboard backlight buttons (Fn + F6/F7) no longer function to change the brightness; the backlight still automatically turns off after a delay and turns on again with a keystroke. The fan is indeed more aggressive, remaining on for longer, but it does eventually turn off for me (in Silent Mode). Fn + F5 still toggles Silent/Basic mode, and you can tell based on the power LED's "breathing" pattern, but the OSD message is gone. My laptop retains its ability to sleep on close and wake on keystroke.

Definitely some inconsistent effects here.

Running Pop_OS 19.10 super smooth. I did add a 1TB NVMe drive for Pop_OS though. Going to try and pass the Windows drive through with KVM. Decided on keeping the laptop so now I will order the 16GB RAM stick so she should do even better.

"FIX FOR LOW SOUND OUTPUT FROM SPEAKERS:
Be sure the Sound Blaster Connect application is running.
Select a sound profile (Game/Music/Movie, etc)
and make sure the Pre-Amp is turned on. Makes a night and day difference"

I don't see any settings in the Sound Blaster Connect app that are labeled "Preamp", please help.

Wait, did your unit actually wake when the lid was opened? I thought it was not a feature on this laptop.

This is after the firmware upgrade right about the lid closed doesn't go to sleep. because I just opened mine setup everything and the lid when it close laptop goes to sleep.

Just received mine, here some updates:
chrome freeze a couple of times. will keep watching

I have 2X16gb corsair ddr4 ram, I used one to replace 8gb, the first try failed starting the sytem. so i tried the second one, it works. not sure if it is the problem of ram or the machine.

then i ram passmark:
PassMark rating:2643.3 57th Percentile
cpu:7539
2D:436
3D:1215
Disk mark 3920
memory mark:1593

Will test run for a week or two to decide if I should keep it or now. Feel like a not fully tested unit.

Overall, the major selling point of this one is light weight, quiet for regular use, decent battery life. My only concern is the potential quality. how long can it last.
