Newbie question on this laptop....I know one of the limiters to its performance is the single channel 8gb ram it has. So, could I potentially upgrade that sometime to a single 16gb ram chip to bump up the performance of it?

I have an old Dell Inspiron 13 2-in-1 tablet that seems to be showing its age and on the fence to get this one. I don't use my current laptop but here and there, however I am always on the lookout for an upgrade.

Yes, most new distro support AMD APUs.

This is a good deal for an i5 equivalent R5 system.
However, if you do not need a new laptop this year, I'd wait until next year.
1. AMD Renoir will be out and will increase competition.
2. Intel i5-1035G4 and G7 will be 12 months old and will have to come down in price to compete. Maybe the G7 will be favored over the G5 for these low end laptops to compete with AMD.

I'd expect similar prices for low end laptops next BF but with better mobile APUs and dual RAM slots, so IMO best to wait.

Quite a lot of misinformation in this thread. For in depth review, just go here: https://www.notebookcheck.net/Wal...260.0.html

I've heard that by bf 2062, computing will be so ubiquitous that the idea of a "personal" computer will be considered a joke.

That is not the issues, the max is 16gb. I have a 16gb stick in my laptop, The issue with a dual channel and single channel is like high a single lane highway or a two lane highway, you are going to read and write fast with two lane, simply having more memory in a single lane is not going to help you. This is more evident in iGPU performance. A single lane R5 is going to only marginally better than a intel HD640.
