definitely get R5 one. given now that the R3 has gone up from $199 to $249, it's no longer a debate.

Just for my own curiosity, does much of anyone else here use the hdmi output on this thing? I need it for my work connecting to a 4K monitor. I am getting intermittent ext monitor blanking so just trying to see how common this is. I did a clean window install and using the latest amd chipset and radeon drivers from amd site;

That cable and monitor worked fine on my older HP. Gonna try a completely different cable but not optimistic about that. I got another one ordered from walmart trying to see if this is just limited to this one i am currently running. I really like it for the size and weight. wish the battery last a little longer but it's not bad. But this unstable hdmi output could be a real dealbreaker for me.

Also need advice on the R3 vs. R5 one.

I got the R5 model at $300 but I have an R3 model waiting at Walmart to pickup at $200.

I figure I have to upgrade to 8GB of RAM (128gb of storage is fine for me), so that's about $30, total $230 for the R3 version with 8GB RAM.

I don't see the point of the R5 vs the R3, the R5 is gimped by the single channel RAM, and the R3 is more than enough power for web browsing/video/office use, which is all you can really logically due with this laptop due to single channel + thermals. I know it is more "future proof" but I don't see this laptop lasting long enough to make that difference anyway.

Any other reason as to why I should stick with the R5 model over saving ~$70 with the R3?

Im using edge beta.

3 hours with 67% full, if that helps. i have 25 tabs open. but Im not watching vids.

isnt vid watching pretty standard to kill battery life? it would destroy my macbook
Yes, videos are power hungry, but vary a lot depending on what resolution, format and how the graphics cpu is being used. Even if you're watching videos, many websites now have video ads that consume power, so you may not be doing identical or similar comparisons. Blocking ads can sometimes help save power, too.

Given your use case and being ok with 128gb of RAM, I think you'll be fine with the R3. In fact, I was using a laptop with similar performance (a Thinkpad with an i5-5300u) as my main laptop for awhile.

The R5 does have double the cores and more storage... For my purposes doing development the extra cores help. Plus I wanted a more significant upgrade from my previous laptop.

Buy both R3 and R5 (when they're $200 and $300 again). Can't beat having two nice laptops for the price of one typical mid-tier laptop. That's what I did. Why? Because nothing is better than separation of concerns and having a "plan B". I'll use R5 for serious development, and R3 will be a beatup laptop for web browsing and youtube. R3 will be also used as a Windows Update "testing waters" guinea pig; R5 will have WU paused until the update is proven to be problem-free. All too often WU ruins everything, and if you only have one laptop and using it for serious work, it can easily leave you stranded for hours, if not days. Also, two laptops can serve as donors of parts for each other, you can always frankenstein one working laptop out of two. What if battery goes bad and warranty expired? I doubt there will be Motile batteries for sale; both R3 and 5 have tge same 47Wh battery, so you have a backup. Also, I'm going to upgrade R5 with 16GB RAM - 8GB stick from it will go to R3. Noice!

tldr; Your resistance is futile, buy all versions of Motile!

So far great laptop for the money. I'm using this as an arcade machine, any ideas on being able to turn this on via another method besides the power button? Looked in the bios and didn't see an option to power on via the power switch on.

Ordered Dec 15 for delivery Dec 20. Received FedEx notification Dec 18 via text alerting me signature required for delivery Dec 19 by end of day. End of day Dec 19 status changed to: Scheduled Delivery: Pending. No change since. No longer holding my breath for holiday delivery.
The same happened to me - no updates since December 13. I called Walmart and they sent me another laptop, Fedex support has no idea where is the laptop.

Laptop has been a nightmare for me. I started getting those random black screens. Then later got blue screens. Opened it up, but wasn't sure how the lid sensor looks. Tried updating the graphics software along with windows updates. My screen would sometimes go haywire then make a loud screech. Later, couldn't get past the hello screen as it'd just keep loading. Did a windows refresh, then it worked okay but noticed the H and U keyboard keys stopped working. Just about gave up and ordered another one and suddenly it works again. Spent all day working on it yesterday and still unsure if it'll even be stable. When it works, it's great. But now I'm afraid of updating anything and screwing it up.

Can someone post pics of the lid close switch sensor or step by step on how to update the bios? Tried the wiki, but seemed confusing to me. Much appreciated
I just got mines today and experience twice the screen would go to black. Nothing would wake it up. Had to turn off the laptop and after logging in the screen went black again. I do not know the reason why. It is really frustrating because I really like the laptop since I got it for 240 only after the discounts.

Mine will shut off in the middle of usage. The keyboard will light up but no matter what I hit it won't turn on unless I restart it.
That has happened to me twice already too. Anyone one have any ideas what it could be?
