if you had opened task scheduler and removed the THX entries in the library, that would have fixed it without rolling it back to ground zero.
Thanks! not sure I'll need to do it again, but good to know :Smilie

if you get the i5 version, it's competitive with R5 3500u. the i5 also have the avx-512 instruction set. The report is that the i3 version is now coming in and the i5 version are nearly bought out by people. if you happen to get the new stock i3 then it sucks compared to the motile m142 with R5.

the iris graphic on i5-1035G4 is competitive with vega.. However, the i3-1031G1 is intel UHD, which really sucks compared to vega

I would probably have got a costco one with i5 myself. the only thing is that that thing doesn't have any 4K60hz output, which i need for my work since my work requires connecting to a 4k monitor.. The usb C on that hp is data only with no PD or DP, like our motile.

both the motile and the hp with i5 have HDMI 2.0

HP also only come with 4gb ram and 128gb ssd. but it does have 2 sodimm slots. HP does have a 2.5 in bay, but the connecting cable is not included

HP also weigh slightly more at 3.2 lb vs motile 2.6 lb and is slightly bigger.

Summary: if you can still get your hand on HP i5 version for $300, then it's a good deal.. if you can only get the i3 version, then it's not a good deal
You might want to update your HP specs.
All reports indicate that the HP does not have a port on the motherboard for a 2.5" SSD.
There's room (if you cut it out the restrictions on the bottom cover), but that is irrelevant if you cannot plug one into the motherboard.

Was watching a movie in bed last night, with disabled touchpad, was not touching keyboard, was using Bluetooth headphones - when all of a sudden, Cortana pops up with something like "I can learn to understand you much better... blah-blah... I need your permission to help." I have Cortana disabled from the beginning, I never use this stuff. My taskbar has Cortana button removed. All settings for Cortana were turned off. WTF?! Is my beloved Motile remotely controlled by Walmart? By China? By aliens?! I didn't press or say anything that could potentially trigger Cortana. I need to find a good slickdeal on tinfoil hats...

yeah. i wannna say the HP also have HDMI 2.0, both the i3 and i5 ver. As for the drive slot, i haven't actually have a chance to open it myself yet. but I do know right off the cable is not included as well as very tight fit for anything. It's definitely not an idea set up for storage expansion like the motile.

Doesn't matter if a cable were included if there is no slot/port/plug for it on the motherboard. The HP only has one option for built-in storage - the m.2 drive, which can be replaced with a larger drive.
Users can also insert an SD card into the SD card reader on the side, but that is not built-in storage.

The last time I got a gray screen a tapped the start button and it went away.
That technique didn't work before.
I haven't upgraded the BIOS and I'm still waiting on a replacement from Walmart.

Does anyone know what the return window is on replacements? The replacement is in the "processing" stage.

After a week with this, I am starting to get annoyed at the instabbility of the HDMI video output. my external monitor keep getting blanking out intermittently.

Anyone else having this same problem? wondering if i should order another one...i am using the latest amd driver, not from motile but from amd site.
I was able to fix this issue by playing around with the "Refresh Rate" in the display settings. I changed mine from 59 to 60 and the issue went away. It might depend on your monitor spec though.

Actually for me it seems to be interference from the power cable being right next to the hdmi cable. one day i notice by chance when i had by usual power and hdmi cablle all right next to each other going around the back of the monitor but i didn't have the power adapter to the computer plugin. when i power on the laptop running on battery the ext monitor was working fine. I then notice i forgot the laptop power was not plugin. so i power down the laptop and plug it in and power up again. immediately there was some sort of signal problem on the ext monitor. so i power down and reroute the cables in the back so the power cable and adapter was nowhere near each other. Haven't noticed anymore issues again. but i am still testing out

i see. that's worse than i thought. i haven't opened mine yet but that's definitely not a good thing at all

I was still using BIOS version 1.03 and I started getting the stupid BIOS update pop-up with the THX installer that would fail and became an annoyance, so I ran the 1.06 update manually via an admin Command Prompt.

Can anyone confirm after the 1.06 update if TPM is enabled on your machine? I could have sworn this laptop had that option enabled and mine says its missing. For anyone who hasn't updated their firmware: If you type tpm.msc in the search box in Windows, does something show up?

Another reason for clean install Wink my clean install motille never bother me about any bios update. Running the original bios pretty good right now. Unless there's anything new i am missing out

We're getting closer to the return period for many.

Anyways, major laptop brands (Dell, Apple, HP) usually use the following suppliers which are Compal Electronics (Taiwan), Quanta Computer (Taiwan), Foxconn Electronics (Taiwan), Flextronics (Singapore), Pegatron (AsusTek) (Taiwan), Inventec (Taiwan), Wistron (Taiwan). Of course, the locations are simply where the headquarters are.

This laptop is manufactured by Tsinghua Tongfang https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsinghua_Tongfang which is owned by Tsinghua Holdings https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsinghua_Holdings, a state owned enterprise and company officials are CCP government people.

Another company owned by Tsinghua Holdings is Tsinghua Unigroup, which was going to purchase Western Digital the famous US maker of WD & Sandisk storage products, but never happened due to US security concerns https://www.latimes.com/business/...story.html.

Tongfang was sold from Tsinghua University to China National Nuclear Corp another state owned entity https://www.caixinglobal.com/2019...01757.html.

Tongfang also makes TV's under brand names Element, Seiki, and Westinghouse.

How concerned from a security perspective should one be? Like say average Joe going to work?

No idea what THX, Walmart, and all did to check into this as being as secure as say buying a Dell computer. Not trying to be tinfoil... just wondering what people think since this is a new brand and I don't know what Walmart did here since they're not really an electronics brand and probably don't have people working on this with that kinda expertise.

I know everything electronics today is made in Chinese factories, and all the parts used in the supply chain, but there's some kind of US brand that knows electronics or security probably checking things?

Sorry posted a little too early.

I'm using the original BIOS, 1.03. I'm a little afraid to try 1.05 or 1.06 given all the issues.

just upgraded mine to 32GB ram with this:

https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-26...op?ie=UTF8

worked great. probably the cheapest if not one of the cheapest 32gb sodim you can find out there. I actually bought another one also for another laptop.

you can never have enough ram. you might ask what's the point of anything more than 8gb ram?
well, with a lot of ram, you can completely disable the virtual memory and completely run from ram.

also I use ramdisk software which create a virtual ram based disk. ultrafast access time order of magnitude faster than ssd. the 4k read write speed is also multiple times faster as is the transfer speed. I set the system and windows temp folder to the ramdisk under environment variable. a lot of the temp files are now on the ramdisk...

also save wear on your ssd...

There's the reason for more than 16gb ram...
I've upgraded the RAM to 32GB as well. Under Task Manager, the laptop seems to never use beyond 10GB/30GB (I assume the missing 2GB is allocated to VRAM). I tend to have 30-40 Chrome tabs open, a bunch of Microsoft Office apps, sometimes Firefox and Edge running as well. I never seem to see RAM use more than 10GB (+/- 0.5GB) and available RAM seems to stay around 20GB under Task Manager > Performance > Memory. Just curious if 32GB is overkill and if the laptop can use more than 16GB.
