this is becoming an insanely good deal. it was a good deal at 399, better at 349. and now 299? it's one of those slickdeals i'm tempted to buy even though i dont need it!
I am sure if you wait even more till 2021 or better 2022 BF, there will be even better electronics. 😛
Review for the laptop [notebookcheck.net]

Seems to be 2 M.2 slots and 1 DDR4.

To all who are interested in upgrading to BIOS 1.06:
The THX updater service kicks off the upgrade and can be found in this folder:
C:\Program Files\THX

thx-update-svc.exe should be run as Administrator.

It will connect to the motile website and download all of the update files to C:\Windows\Temp

Once you reboot it will prompt you to update the BIOS.

It will attempt to runCode:C:\Windows\Temp\AFUWINx64.exe C:\WINDOWS\Temp\PF4PU1FN106.ROM /X /R /B /P /N /K /L /REBOOT in a DOS command window

It will reboot your machine after it runs if it is successful, Otherwise the window will just close.

Mine failed with this error code:Code:d4 - Error: The system DMI data size is greater than ROM file's DMI data length I had to remove the /R from the command line and re-run via Powershell as administrator.
Thanks for your post. I ran the commands in PowerShell and had success. Didn't need to remove the R.

With regard to the bios. I downloaded the 1.05 zip from the support site. Like everyone else the auto update from the thx service failed. I copied the rom file only from the temp dir and placed it in the directory from unzipping the 1.05 download. then i went in the subdir with the bat file and i edited the bat file to change the rom to the 1.06 rom, then ran the bat file and everything matched up and the bios updated to 1.06 w/o problem. i also update to 1.08 ec per instructions in other thread. it is crazy that they cannot come up with working bios update. I have had no issues otherwise and have installed arch linux as dual boot and the linux works very well.

i do have a question though, on mine the lit keyboard will go off after a small amount of time if it is not being used and you need to hit a key to light it up again. is this the normal behavior ? or is there a way to change it so it stays lit until you turn it off with the fn-f6 ? all of the fn keys work in linux except the backlight keyboard ones. linux sees it as the asus-wmi module for the function keys.

despite the quirks, this is a very nice machine for the money.

after 24 hr experience with a usb C power supply and barrel plug adapter, i notice once while the motile intermittently flipping between on battery and plug in status. It seems to happen when playing 4K video or i guess when you tax both cpu and gpu. but it also happen once a while even with medium cpu usage.

These are the accessories i use:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1 [amazon.com]
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1 [amazon.com]

That usb C adapter suppose to supply 60W to the usb C. It's being used by itself with no other usb device connecting to the power adapter.

Anyone else also notice this? I am getting a usb power meter and gonna do some measurements...
Please bear in mind that NotebookCheck stated these can draw over 61 watts. The stock power brick is rated about 65watts.

The light going out is normal on Motiles.

Can you link me to the EC 1.08 instructions please.

Yep, it does draw above 60W sometimes. I finally got a usb power meter showing that. but you have to tax both the cpu and igpu. running cinebench only by itself only get up to about 45-47W.

What was the problem? (other than the auto update not working, but that was old news and Jgayda666's method works just fine in cmd).

Sure, you could put it on a USB drive. The auto update fails but saves the package to C:\Windows\Temp\Motile-M14x-BIOS-Update-N.1.06-Installer-0.1.7.zip. Simply extract the contents to your USB stick and do everything from there (i.e., AFUWINx64.exe PF4PU1FN106.ROM /X /R /B /P /N /K /L /REBOOT (omit /R if you want to play with fire)). You could just as easily extract it somewhere on the C drive... which the auto update already does.

If you wanted to use UEFI instead of Windows... you'd want to
  1. Install the UEFI shell to your USB stick.
  2. Obtain the old BIOS 1.05 EC 1.08 update package. [motilecustomerservice.com]
  3. Copy the AMD_PICASSO_PF4PU1F_ESI_3200U_3500U_BIOS_N.1.05_EC_1.08.00_20191127\BIOS\PF4PU1F_3200U_BIOS\FlashUtil\AfuEfi64\AfuEfix64.efi program from the old update package to the USB stick.
  4. Copy PF4PU1FN106.ROM from the new update package to the USB stick.
  5. Boot into the UEFI shell.
  6. Run AfuEfix64.efi PF4PU1FN106.ROM /x /r /b /p /n /k /l /reboot (omit /r if you want to play with fire).
I didn't actually try that, so what would happen is anyone's guess. I imagine AfuEfix64.efi would work the same way as AFUWINx64.exe, but under UEFI instead of Windows. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

price is now $379 for the black and $349 for rose and silver. I guess we know which one is the most popular now....

The black one is definitely the best in term of backlit visibility

Is this laptop good just OOB or does one need to do these BIOS updates? I dont recall there being lengthy BIOS discussions in the other feed for the cheaper Ryzen 3.

Is this laptop good just OOB or does one need to do these BIOS updates? I dont recall there being lengthy BIOS discussions in the other feed for the cheaper Ryzen 3.
I am runniing the original bios right now, no problem at all. .I did a clean install and using latest drivers directly from amd. upgraded to ax200 and 16gb ram..

I am using mine OOB with no updates and I have had no issues. I have not used the HDMI port, so can't speak about that.

good to know, thanks. I'm in between jumping on the ryzen 3 or waiting hopefully for something similar to this one to come again. I'm used to a noisy laptop so comments about fan noise dont discourage me much
