The better deal is through the Canon Upgrade Program. You can get a new EOS R plus EF Mount, and SD card for $1,199.20. Just need a serial number from an out of warranty canon camera to get the 20% off the new EOS R sale price.
You realize it, I realize it, paying clients could care less. They want their photos.
If you are doing weddings or events dual is a must have. I would almost go as far to say it is irresponsible of the photographer if they don't.
i do realize that these things happen from time to time but it is verrrrrrrrrrry rare for a card to fail after one event for someone to say dual card is a must for paid.

This is a $1500 camera deal and we're arguing about a $100 sd card?
Like all "backups", you never need one until you do.
Would the Canon upgrade program work for me buying my wife a 5d Mark IV? We have two Canon 6d's currently we purchased new years ago.
Yes, it would. You just need to provide the serial number to them and you will get the 20% discount.
You need to call 1.866.443.8002 (the Canon Upgrade Program number) or you can call their sales number and mention the Upgrade Program. They will ask if you have an out of warranty or broken camera, just tell them you have an out of warranty camera and provide the serial number.
Some reps will say you need to send your camera in to get the discount. This is NOT the case. Hang up and call back to get a different rep. There are a number of threads on here (this is one) that cover this, in case you want to read a bit more on it.
I bought an EOS R 2 weeks ago through the program and didn't need to send in my old camera. Just called this morning to get a price adjustment to match the updated pricing they have now. Extremely happy!

And then you think about how many weddings have been shot so far on single cards or even film. When I had single cards, I would switch them during the wedding, so if something happened to one, I'd have 4 other cards. Doesn't bring the photos back, but it's something. Not that it has ever happened to me. Anyway, I'm ok with shooting weddings on one card.
Oh, and this is a great deal. Amazing camera, and refurbished from Canon is as good as new. The other deal for the new one with printer and such is great too, as you can sell those things. I thought it was a great deal when I paid $2,900 for my 5DIV two years ago.....
I haven't used a 5D IV and i'm not paid for my photos. I can say that I had an SD card fail. Just the one in hundreds of thousands of pics and I still felt robbed and cheated that I would never get those photos back. I have to think if I'd paid someone to shoot an event and they told me there would be no pics of it due to a card failure, I would question their professionalism for shooting with a camera where that could be an issue.
I have used an R post eye detect firmware. Just my opinion, but the eye-AF is nowhere close to Sony. The feature is at least available now, but it only works OK, compared to Sony's which works amazingly well. Again, just my opinion after a weekend of shooting.
Have the 5d Mark II. Looking to upgrade. Torn between the EOS R and Mark iV. Also anyone know how much the Mark II will fetch in craigslist (its got some scratches but works great).

Not much in my opinion. I sold a 5D Mark III with under 10k actuations for 800 on Craigslist. I could of possibly went higher, like $900, but I didn't want to bother. My camera was in very good condition no marks.
I have owned the R for about a year and it's pretty great... the focus is quick and precise. Also, the eye focus competes strongly with Sony after their firmware update a while back.
It would be worthwhile to test either camera before making the choice, Sony, Canon, etc.
Appreciate the alternative perspective, like I said I haven't heard of anyone struggling with the R as much as I did. I remember at one point a model was wearing a camo print jacket and the eye detection just absolutely freaked out jumping from their eye to various points all over their jacket. It was a painful shoot, but loved how light and slim it was for a full frame, way better the bulky 5D/6D bodies.
But trying out and testing the camera is great advice, it just makes jumping on a good deal a little harder unless you've already done your research and know what you're after.
I'm leaning towards a Mirror-less full frame, but the R has some problems. I haven't noticed these comments in other reviews of the R, so definitely take my experiences with a grain of salt..
The autofocus was horrendous and way worse than my SL2, which surprised me. The R (using EF lenses via the adapter) was constantly hunting for focus. I was testing it out at a fashion shoot and it really struggled. There's a weird delay through the viewfinder of when you take a pic and it taking it. I shared the camera at the office and everyone noticed the same, so isn't just something I was noticing being used to the SL2. I'm willing to bet that's some hidden setting though. The eye detect autofocus was complete garbage though and consistently failed to hit the target (again this was well lit models on bright colored backgrounds, very contrasty). For most of the shoot I ended up switching to manual because it just couldn't give consistent, fast results.
This was before the firmware update, but by all accounts that was an incremental improvement, so I'm not confident these issues have been resolved. Again though, I very much seem to be the only one having such a horrible experience so who knows.
I'll be renting an A7 II/III shortly, I hear they're great with Canon glass and assuming it isn't the hot mess the R was, that's the direction I'll be going in. I say all this as a lifelong Canon fanboy and defender.
From everything I heard the update was not incremental but was a huge improvement
My belief this is not really refurbed. I could be wrong but if they want to discount some stock heavily, this is the way to do it. That way it doesnt seems like the prices are dropping like a rock.
