this works both ways!

Alaska Airlines have round trip airfares travelling to and from San Jose CA (SJC) and Honolulu Hawaii (HNL) for $278, nonstop. These are Alaska Airlines' 'saver fares', a restricted-type fare.

Travel Availability:
Departs SJC: Jan 21, 23, 28, 30; Feb 6, 11, 25, 27; March 3, 5, 10, 17; April 20, 27-29; May 4
Departs HNL: Jan 30; Feb 4, 6, 27; March 5, 10, 12, 17, 19, 23-25, 31; April 14-15, 27-29; May 4-7, 13-14

I have never done one of these deals or really flown in general. What should I expect the final cost to be? Would I need to pack light because of baggage fees?

you should. decline every fee charged items such as seat selection, priority boarding, …. etc. Alaska airline charge check-in baggage for $30 when I flew from EWR to SFO last week. I have one carry on and one personal bag free.
