I have never done one of these deals or really flown in general. What should I expect the final cost to be? Would I need to pack light because of baggage fees?

you should. decline every fee charged items such as seat selection, priority boarding, …. etc. Alaska airline charge check-in baggage for $30 when I flew from EWR to SFO last week. I have one carry on and one personal bag free.
