Best price I've seen on this dimmer (1st gen).

2nd gen is available too for $34.99

If I remember correctly gen 1 has security issues because it is using older zwave that had these flaws.

Gen 2 fixes it.

I've only learned this from following this forum, will try and find a source that says what this gen fixes. Also doing a quick google on zwave security vulnerabilities and choosing any year < 2019 should suffice to describe what the vulnerabilities actually are.

"Featuring improved security and several form-factor changes to ease the installation process"

Edit: apparently slick deals doesn't want us to read about what gen2 fixes. Added spaces to link just remove them.
Go get a hub. Something you will eventually want and you can so much more. Who wants another app installed and Wi-Fi connection?

Is this one just the addon that won't work as a standalone device?

EDIT: nope, it's not an addon. I looked up my previous order history. Have these in the house and have been using them for a little over a year. No problems at all. I use the samsung smartthings hub, and they attached to google home as well.

I paid 30 for them last november.

Good deal. I'd get a couple if I hadn't already gotten the Inovelli dimmers. The GE switches are solid.

Any idea what is pros and cons of 2nd gen vs 1st gen? i.e. worth the extra five bucks?

my understanding is that 2nd gen is smaller in the back. If you are installing in a cramped box already, every little bit helps.

I feel like the zooz switches from thesmartesthome.com are a better deal and comparable in price.Only issue is shipping.

Second gen also doesn't have the three fins on the right and left sides. This makes them easier for multi-gang installs as well.

Need a hub for this it looks like eh? Are there switches that don't require a hub?

I think you *can* remove them, but I wouldn't say supposed to. They're for cooling, so I wouldn't remove them unless you have. That said, I installed 2 Gen 1s into a 3 gang box and it was tight enough that I had to remove some of the fins.
Removing the fins derates the load capacity of the switch. Typically with LED lights that's not going to be an issue, but if you've still got halogens or incandescent lighting loads it should be something to keep in mind.
