What even is this? As I understand, it sort of "expands" the functionality of a ThinkPad laptop, but does it come with additional processing hardware? Does the dock charge the laptop, or act like an ancillary battery pack? Can the laptop charge through the dock? I have so many questions...
It charges it and adds more ports (video, USB). Makes it simple to be on the go with the laptop, and then plug into a traditional multi-monitor setup with a keyboard and mouse already setup. There is no additional processing power.

This is the old model though (newer ones are USB C /TB3 based). Great price ithough f you still have an old laptop.

it will charge your laptop as long as you have the power cord connected to the dock. You can have additional monitors, usb devices (mice, keyboard, phone charger etc), ethernet/LAN etc connected to it as well.

I have something similar. Basically I used to have to plug my charger, 2 HDMIs, USB, ethernet and Flash Drive into my computer each time I started work. But now I just plug the one cable (or in this case your laptop sits on the dock). It doesn't increase functionality of the laptop for the most part.

How does this connect to the laptop? A proprietary connector of some kind?

I just got this model yesterday. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1 is this better? I was dissapointed that the back was a display port instead of hdmi. I ended up buying a separate display port to hdmi cable. Should I return it and buy this?

I think so, outdated tech, will be replaced by USB-C

Funny these are so uncommon now folks don't know what they are. This is a one step station your laptop docks onto via a special connector built in to compatible laptops. So you have a Thinkpad and use it at work and home, for example... this lets you setup monitors, keyboard, charger, etc. at multiple places and just dock and undock with one click. Well worth it for a laptop frequently used in different locations.

Modern USB C docks have mostly replaced these but I think these still have some advantages driving monitors as they give direct connections.
