If you want to roleplay actually being in space, it's hard to do better than Elite Dangerous in VR.

But just understand that the idea of actually being in space is way more fun sounding than it actually is. I remember I bought this game for roughly this price and the hour and a half I spent inside it consisted primarily of staring at a black void while looking for space rocks to mine.

This is not an action game, even if the combat can be fun. This is a space sim and to be perfectly frank, space is WAY more boring than people have been led to believe.

Does this have a strong community still? I haven't seen many people playing this in the JoinUsInVR steam group lately. But many have it

From the grapevine a lot of people say this is still fun without VR, but VR adds significantly to the atmosphere. You do really need a HOTAS (flight stick + throttle combo) or at bare minimum a PC connected controller.

You'll likely want "Commander Deluxe Edition," since it combines the base game and Season Pass, then throws in some bonus DLC (ship paint). If you click through to the "Horizons Season Pass" there's a description of what was added.

The games turns into Space Truck Simulator if you don't want to get into combat.

That's not necessarily a bad thing as learning the mechanics of the game and mastering docking, light speed travel and navigation can be very satisfying...but people should not expect a Freespace or X-wing style campaign story. Try Rebel Galaxy Outlaw if you're looking for a modern version of that.

As for Elite, the galaxy is MASSIVE with some neat things to discover and different goals to chase.
There are various factions to build up rep for as well as hostile aliens and pirates.

If you own a VR headset, this is a must try experience.
If you are any kind of astronomy or space nerd at all, this is a must try even without VR.

They updated the tutorials on the basics of the game so the learning curve for newbies is much less steep.

It can be played with a xbox controller just fine but takes some getting used to.
If you can swing a flight stick or full on HOTAS, you're really in for a treat.

I think I'm like many others that have dipped in and out of the this game over the past few years but I've been very happy with my time zipping around space and completing cargo delivery or passenger missions that turn out to be more interesting than they originally let on to be.

Definitely get the expanded version for $12 as they are still adding content to the most recent season.

This is an awesome game - a massive open sandbox. So it's somewhat you make of it. There is a huge online community, and you can play solo, with a group, or open play. You can also "wing up" with friends and squadrons.

It will take a while to get any kind of proficiency, so make sure you complete the tutorials. It does make things easier with a decent multi-button joystick (like T16000M). But the throttle is totally optional IMO.

I don't play the game, but isn't there some big expansion coming out relatively soon? Wondering if its worth waiting.

Having played the original on my C64 back in the 80s, I can say this re-imaging is an underrated masterpiece. It can be boring AF, and a huge time sink, but then you realize how masterfully it is all executed. Don't bother with the basic version as missing a lot. Plan on investing some time and although there is space combat, I don't recommend trying that right away.

Yes there is, though how big it'll be is unknown. They will be releasing fleet carriers though before that. Those will be sweet to have some we'll be able to use them as a mobile base of operation.

For everyone on the fence. Please know that the game is great if you enjoy space sims. Space trucking/mining explains it well if you don't do combat. It's also a major grind fest for some of the unique features, like special anti-xeno weapons. Further, it should be pointed out that if you want those anti-xeno weapons, you MUST own the Horizon expansion as the grinding requires planet landing. This also applies to if you want the most power to kill, survive, or cover large interstellar distances.

If it helps, HOTAS and VR make the game the best possible experience to my understanding, but i play on Xbox where VR is not possible and don't own a HOTAS. I still find the Xbox controller is well mapped and enjoyable using.

Have fun playing "Space rock mining and cargo hauling Tycoon". Mine/haul to earn credits to buy a better ship... to mine more and haul more. To buy another ship. To haul more and mine more. Oh and all the travel time in-between.

By the time you're able to afford a ship that can actually be useful in combat you'll probably be tired of it.

But for $12 it sure is pretty looking. I paid much more. Maybe I need to reinstall and dust off the flight stick.
