These are now officially hackable. You can add more games and other things. Look up Project Lunar. There are more features coming, but you can do quite a bit with v1.0 which just released a day or two ago after a few months in beta.

Can you hack them with a Mac or do you need windows?

Seems like this has settled in at the $50 price. I will bite at $40, as I know I will hack it and it will sit in a drawer for a few years.

I've bought the NES mini console and returned it... while it's a neat idea, in reality, I'd rather spend my time playing new games with good graphics than time travel to 1990s. Life is too short. I'd imagine most people who buy this don't actually play them, but just store them in a closet somewhere for posterity.

My wife and I play the mini consoles. They're easy to use and hassle free. It's fun to play some Mario and Contra once in a while. Yes, mostly a novelty but we love these old games and the mini consoles provide an easy way for us to enjoy them.

To each his own. I own every 80s/90s console out there and all of the newer stuff. I seem to go back to the retro stuff mostly because of ease of games and you don't need a controller with almost as many buttons as a keyboard.

I'll bite when it's $20.

I bought all of the mini consoles. The one I like most is the PlayStation one because it allows me to play all of the snes, nes, mame, etc stuff.

I got one for $45 yesterday at gamestop. This is a great little system. One thing of notice is that you can add a usb flash drive for extra storage but only certain ones work. My PNY and Kingston drives don't work but all my Sandisk drives work. So make sure you only stick to Sandisk for added flash storage on your mini.

I have a preteen daughter and we have enojoyed a lot playing old school games. Super Bomberman is a favorite of hers as well as Mario Bros.

Most people, I agree, but there's a time and place. My daughter doesn't have the dexterity for a modern game. She can understand simple controls to get around well enough. The retro consoles are a fun and easy way to play games together.

As an FYI, ATGames makes a Sega Genesis Flashback that has an actual cartridge port that allows you to play original cartridges as well. Either system is a good deal.
