Below from the HP website on the printer. Sounds pretty skeevy. So the printer can phone home and block using 3rd party ink?

heh - I -literally- just got back from setting up a new pc for a family member that has this printer....

....Easiest printer I've ever setup.

Went to windows printer options and added new printer. The printer showed up as wireless, I pressed connect and bam... EFFING done. Test print completed it was flawless.

If you just need prints, I can vouch this just works. As for other types of media like photos, I don't know, but as a printer for basic needs - perfect.
Looks like its eligible for Instant Ink, free if you print under 15 pages a month.

Edit: I stand corrected, as others mentioned this doesn't qualify for the free 15 pages/month. $2.99/month for 50 pgs/month is the cheapest plan available for this printer

Only 3.5 stars out of 5 on amazon over 2000 reviews. Since all printers suck, Im gonna at least vote for starting with one with good reviews.

Got this one last year for $100 and it's been working in perfect condition.

Thanks OP, just bought.... I needed scanner and I looked into their subscription service and it should fit my needs since its based on pages and not photos. I should get four, 4x6 for every 8x14 legal sheet I have which is CHEAP considering on demand printing.

3 bucks for fifty 8x10s is damn good.

Go all the way to checkout and be logged in as a rewards member. Also.. I really mean all the way...like right before you press "order" to see the final price. I got it for $72 total with tax and make sure you are picking up - NOT delivery.

These are chipped ink cartridges like the Epson ones - evil way for them to try and prevent cheap ink refilling at home using a bottle of ink and syringe kit sold on ebay etc.

Doesn't need internet access - logic is built into the printer itself to check and reject non hp cartridges.

If important, get the $20 wireless Canon aio in the other thread with easy to refill cartridges.

If you don't want to go the oem ink route, is it possible to buy 3rd party carts? I only see ppl talking about refilling, which I'd really rather not do.

I actually bought different inks from two third party sellers on Amazon and it worked just fine. Didn't have any issues thus far.
