Looks really interesting! Cheaper than a Synology NAS but with more features. I don't think it would be as plug-n-play as a Synology though.

While this is insanely cool new product, if you're in a hurry to get something now, before this is actually released, do have a look at HP Proliant MicroServer. Gen 7 is definitely outdated, but Gen 8/9 are nice contenders and sometimes can be had for around $300 used.

Hardware looks good but what about software? That's part of what you pay for with synology.

Exactly. Love my Synology, but it is expensive!

Used freenas several years ago. Definitely not a fan. It was so jnstable and fixing problems was total PITA.

Manufacturer claims Ubuntu and Debian availability at launch. Hopefully, more consumer-friendly distros would follow like it happened with Pi.

FreeNAS doesn't run on ARM, so no chance of it being that. There are a number of Linux-based NAS OSs, though, that would seem likely to run fine.

Wonder if it's possible to install other OS versions on the Emmc chip. If so; might get away with xpenology but I'd think OMV or FreeNAS would be sufficient.

Looks like RAM isn't expandable... 4gb? Oof Frown

Between running Plex and the number of Docker containers to get media to plex, I'd imagine you'd kill that pretty quickly, which means running any additional services (NextCloud, etc) would be slim.

Manufacture looks like they will test ARM version of Plex in a few months to give transcoding info. I'm sure it'll run Plex, but you'll likely have to pre-re-encode depending on your media device (ie: Apple TV vs Xbox vs Firestick).

I doubt the ARM SoC will support heavy re-encoding, which is really only a problem for LiveTV and media being streamed outside of your house. As mentioned above, you can get the media to whatever format you need for in-the-house streaming and you probably don't have the same bandwidth restrictions.
