As a watch collector who owns both an SKX007 and an Orient Mako II USA, I can say both are fantastic watches worthy of anyone's collection.

The reason the SKX is so popular within the watch community is two-fold. This watch is much like why the Toyota Corolla and the Honda Civic were (and are) so popular - at their foundation, they are simply products that do what they are supposed to do really well, without tons of bell and whistles, at a reasonable price. And just like many those cars, people who bought the SKX in the 1990s when in came available, are still running to this day. The new hacking and hand-winding is nice, and the movement is definitely an upgrade, but I can say in my day-to-day wearing of different watches, it has never been a dealbreaker that a watch have hacking and hand-winding. Those are simply nice to haves. Personally, I love wearing my SKX on nato straps, as it just seems so natural on it. None of my other watches appear as natural on a nato as the SKX does. On top of all that, the SKX is also hugely popular because of the amount of modifications that exist for it. I myself replaced the bezel with a "coin-edge" style one and a ceramic black insert, but still in the same numbering style that was native to the watch. That way it still looks stock, but the ceramic makes it pop a lot more than the aluminum insert did.

That all said, the suggestion of the Orient watch from majorhavoc is also a good choice. Orient is owned by Seiko, and the movements are still made in-house in Japan. But if you want to have a look at that watch, I would suggest going with the USA version instead of the regular Orient Mako II. Reason being is that it has been upgraded to a sapphire crystal and a solid link bracelet, which gives it a really nice weight. And the white face (if you can get your hands on one), is simply stunning in person. Longislandwatch only has the black version in stock right now, and that is because they've been on sale for $200. Really an awesome price for the amount of watch you get. https://www.longislandwatch.com/O...0200ab.htm

I'm happy to help anyone that may have more questions. But would I buy this watch at this price if I didn't already have one? Absolutely. Take the rubber strap off (unless you like it), throw on a nato strap, and rock out. (Also, don't worry about the metal bracelet the K version has, it is crap so don't even bother)

Ignore the guy that wrote a wall of text on cheaper mechanicals.

The "cheap" seiko mechanical are proven workhorses. Not super accurate out of the box but ANY local watchmaker can regulate it for $50. I had this ages ago when I was a one watch guy and it went to hell and back. The main advantage of Seiko mechanical over Swiss is these go on for a long time without requiring any servicing unlike Swiss movements which usually fall between 4-5 years.

Off topic, this is also a hollywood watch. Robert Redford wore this watch in the movie "Lost At Sea".

For entry level Seiko mechanicels, I highly recommend this, SRP Turtle and the Seiko monster. Can't go wrong with any of these.

Yea but the skx is a classic and 5 sports branding cheapens it IMO

SD watch experts: This is the ISO certified diver that's been discontinued by Seiko right? And superseded by a fashion wannabe diver "style" replacement?

yes. that being said, the new SRPD line (aka Seiko 5 Sports aka 5KX) can be picked up for a low as $160ish pending retail sales. also, virtually all SKX mod parts also fit these new models as outside of the screw down crown (making it 200m water resistant) everything else is the same. in fact, the newer models have some arguably better features like a newer, better movement.

Thank you both for the insight. I had heard that the replacement has a hackable, hand winding movement. I own an SNK80something Seiko 5 field watch and never really had a problem with the older, less feature-rich movement. It's been reliable and plenty accurate for my needs.

SKX not particularly pretty and its popularity is more of a cult thing, as in, if you like watches you MUST have an SKX in your collection. IMO not worth it. Newer 5s are better looking (obviously a taste thing) but are also mechanically superior (not really disputable unless you're really stubborn). Hack/hand-wind very nice to have if you're into watches, bla bla if you're not.
Newer 5 replacement a much better bargain imo.

I have both the SKX007 and the 5KX. They're both nice watches, but if you're not doing any real diving (due to the lack of a screw down crown) the 5KX is tough to beat for $160. And as mentioned above, you can use any SKX mod parts on it if you're so inclined (Crystal, insert, dial, hands, etc).

FYI - The Seiko Samurai is available for $259 on Amazon as well (Orange Dial only - though you could swap out a dial if so inclined). Better movement and a metal bracelet.

I have a 009 and it's a fantastic watch. I love Seiko in general and this is such a classic looking diver.

I'm very tempted to grab a 007 since these have been discontinued.

Good deal it being the J version, sellers usually sell it for higher but the K and J are practically the same

I got Seiko PADI Pepsi diver watch from Slickdeal front page for $225+ tax last year, better deal than this.
Gl with a deal like that again since these aren't being produced anymore.

Couple years back these could be had under $200...supply and demand
