Ugly Stik Spinning Combo - this is a better combo. Might bee too big for a kiddo. It goes on sale very often at the same price
This type of thing is a nice thought, but I would really recommend buying a kit from a company that makes actual fishing gear. Shakespeare, Ugly Stik, Eagle Claw, or even Zebco all make kids fishing combos similar to this that are going to be of much higher quality and not much higher price. You want kids to have fun fishing, which might be hard if their equipment is shoddy and difficult to use.
These "kid" rods are 99% of the time pure junk. Give him an old name brand rod, and a tackle box with a paw patrol sticker put on it- Way better, the same end result with a rod that will cast more than 10ft....

the rod is literally pictured upside-down in all of their pictures, clearly those kids and photographer have actually not been fishing with that type of setup, haha.

No, the little hook on the rod is meant to be the bottom of the rod, and the push button reels are meant to be mounted on top - they are released with a thumb press. All of the line guides are meant to be on top on this kind of rod.

I am sure it can be used in this orientation, but it's not really the intended use.

I think for kids, the $10ish Shakespeare "Dock Demon" is usually a great option.

I forced my kids to learn how to use open faced reels. it really doesn't take long. Just grab some weights for practice casting and after a few random moonshots into the tree even a 5 y/o got the hang of it quickly. Closed reels end up a completely mess way too often.

spinning reels get held with the reel below the rod. baitcaster type reels which require use of your thumb go on the top. it doesnt matter if you are right or left handed, the crank is reversible.

I had one of these thumb ones as a kid. My grandpa just put a couple of weights on the line with no hook for a while.
Then he took the needle nose and clipped the barb off a hook and I used that for a while.

Thanks to that, it wasn't until years later as a scout I had to learn how to get a barbed hook out of a person...
