If you are planning a connection, allow at least 3 hours. Getting to the international terminal is a hike though long corridors to get around all the construction.

Smokin hot deal! The fires aside, anything under $1000 to the east coast of AUS is pretty good.

last march i did a road trip between brizzy and sydney. if you book for the end of australian summer, rental car and RV companies offer super low rates on one-way rentals from victoria to sydney. it's sort of like the florida deals we see in the US in the spring. then a one-way flight to get back to brisbane for your flight home is minimal because there are plenty of ULCCs on the route. just an idea.

Great deal! Qantas are starting their Chicago to Brisbane, ORD-BNE, non-stop service later this year. Look out for deals on that since it'll be a new so quieter route. I'm keeping my eyes out for US to Melbourne.

Was just in Sydney this past December...the fires are up by the Blue Mountains, but yes, the smoke can be seen even from New Zealand, though the fires are no where near a city most tourist will be going to. Even if your planning a trip to the amazing Blue Mountains, you still won't have an issue with any fires.

I'm not going to get into climate change and it's impact here, it's not the place for it. But If you can get there, I highly recommend Australia. The country is beautiful, the people are welcoming, the food is excellent and the wine is outstanding!
