Did they own an XPS? XPS is among the best of the best
You cannot replace the wireless card as it is soldered onto the board. I think that started with the XPS 9370 (2017) model. That's probably the downside of this laptop is that you're stuck with the Killer Wireless chip which is mediocre. Otherwise, it's a decent laptop which you can, as you pointed out, upgrade the SSD fairly easily.
The newest XPS 13" 7930 (2019) does have the newer WIFI 6 wireless chip which is re-branded, but based off the Intel AX200.
Corrections:
1) The web camera on the XPS 9380 is at the top of the screen and not the bottom
2) The newer XPS 7390 (2019) have reports of worse battery life, not better, compared to the older XPS 9380 (2018). Reddit and Dell forums have quite a few post reporting the issues of only getting between 3-4 hours instead of the claimed +9 hours from Dell.
Does your company buy nothing but inspiron laptops?
Company I work for uses all dell laptops.. Latitude & XPS have been very reliable for us.

I'm looking at this thing trying to figure out what makes it a $1700 laptop (original price). It doesn't seem exceptional or anything above average. What an I missing?
If you can manage with this 16:9 screen, this is a good deal
Buy unit
Replace with faster bigger SSD
Replace with Intel AX200 wifi-6 for cheap
Should be a good unit to last along time.

Pretty sure the WiFi is integrated (soldered) in the 9380.
This is a good deal, but I'm hesitant to jump on it due to complaints about the wireless particularly under Linux.
