These seem to use iridium lenses which look cooler and do a decent job with glare but aren't as good as polarized

LOL, yes that is correct. Like you, some have big heads both figuratively and literally. I have these and they fit much better than the non xl ones.

Yes XL is a bigger frame and thus lens. Usually each lens is 1mm wider and 3mm taller.
