Getting ready for 25 comments asking if this has a second RAM slot...

I will save you all the hassle, it does NOT have a second slot for RAM. RAM is single channel/slot only.

I have a 4GB Chromebook and it barely works. The Chrome browser has such a horrible memory leak, that when you first open it you will have 1.5 GB free, but soon it will drop down to 200 MB and even if you close all the tabs but one that is where it will stay.

Search Google for Chromebook memory leak and you will see tons of posts and Google representatives asking if they are using the latest Chrome OS, and then no follow up. Google gets way more credit than they deserve for technological prowess. Maybe in the beginning, but it seems to be a bunch of mediocre hacks now.
It works like this by design. If you want to reduce the memory usage, disable page caching and tab specific memory spaces. That isn't a memory leak, it is memory that has been allocated. A memory leak is memory that has been released by an application but the kernel still maintains it marked as unavailable.

USB-C and DisplayPort are two completely different interfaces. You are confusing USB-C with Thunderbolt, which is an Intel interface that uses either the miniDP or USB-C connector. You do not need a Thunderbolt connector to use a USB-C monitor.
Usb C can implement any extra function or combination of functions... You can have usb c with only data and video output or data and charge only or in case of thunderbolt, all 3... Thats why i didnt say anything about thunderbolt.

Does anyone have a comparison how big a deal is dual channel vs single ram for say the high end (16gb)?
Its only going to effect high mem bandwith applications.. mainly games out of anything most people would use on the laptop.. gfx performance will be around 30 percent less with the single channel... amount of memory isnt gonna effect performance like that..

Heads up, video IS DATA. You do not need DP over USB-C to use a USB-C monitor.

I think there might be some confusion. USB c is great. But usbc w/o the Harry Potter scare (lightening bolt).... Is not thunderbolt compliant which is the useful stuff Every one is AFTEr

Haha, since 16GB of RAM started costing around $50. Smilie

To be honest, I don't really notice a difference between 8 and 16GB (this is in Ubuntu Linux, btw), but I'm happy to have it just in case, and since it doesn't really cost that much more.
You Ubuntu babies are so pathetic. Fedora/RHEL all the way.

Dude from the subreddit says this thing can barely handle Minecraft? Are you kidding me? We had 80386's from 1994 running Doom which had better graphics than Minecraft.

Somebody want to explain that?
The dude is confused. He tried running Minecraft on his calculator and mistook it for his laptop.

1. Does anyone know if the SATA drive can be removed in favor of dual-channel RAM? According to this video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l32orFMzCIk), it would appear its possible.
2. Assuming the answer to number 1 is yes, how much of a price bump for an NVME drive + dual-channel ram would be worthwhile in light of the laptop being $200 as it is? For instance, if an NVME drive and dual channel memory (16GB say) would cost an additional $200, is the laptop worth $400?

thank you!
There is no difference in performance between single channel or dual channel configurations except in the rarest of cases.

Negative. It isn't hard to consume over 4GB of RAM with even moderate everyday use. I agree 8GB is the functional minimum to ensure smooth usage for everyone but power users.

That not withstanding, having a second RAM module allows the CPU to access the RAM in dual channel mode, increasing performance even at lower RAM consumption workloads.

* Power users would benefit from even more than 8, especially for a bit of future proofing.
My cellphone with 2gb ram can handle 30 tabs in chrome.. chill with the 8gb is minimum...lol

Apples and oranges. You can't compare an ARM-based system specifically designed for a (relatively) limited os with a bigger emphassis on power consumption, to a full blown laptop running windows. For example: can you run Visual studio or Adobe Photoshop on your 2gb phone? hell no!

2GB of ram may be fine for an ARM system running android, but 8GB is "pushing" it as a bare minimum in today's world
