I'm not convinced that foam anything is firm.

...but i'm also very fat.
This is exactly the opposite. The more foam, the softer it is

I owned a 12", it was hard as a rock. You can read reviews of the 12" zinus or others on amazon

We bought the 12" Zinus for our travel trailer and it's very firm. We're replacing it this spring. I don't know how it translates to other brands or if it has anything to do with the actual mattress thickness.

I think it depends on how they layered them. 12" is a total of all the layers. I usually look at how thick or thin their top foam layer is to dertermine.

I agree. The foam on this one is pretty thin, not enough to really pad the top. Memory foam, no matter what consistency, needs to be at least 2" thick to have an effect.

12" foam can be both soft or firm... You really need to understand the layer setup... Zinus makes both in 12"... More research would need to be done to know if this is a good bed or not

^^This is correct, generally speaking.
Layers and whatnot can matter, but this is the general rule of thumb.

It really doesn't. It has to do with the density of the foam (mostly) and the temperature (quite a bit less).

5-6lb foam (tempur-pedic, zenus) are firmer and zenus is especially firm when the mattress is cold. I have a zenus I bought for my parents guest room when I come visit.

3lb foam is my favorite (bed in a box), it's soft, but not too soft. I've slept on this as my main bed for 12 years.

Without knowing the density and construction, you really can't infer anything about hardness from the thickness.

And hybrids (Springs with a foam cover) seem like a bad idea.
