Product Description: | Mongoose Excursion mountain bike, 26-inch wheel, 21 speeds, womens frame, black / teal Take on steep slopes and tough trails with glee on the Excursion Mountain Bike from Mongoose. Made for experienced mountain bikers and new riders alike, this hardtail mountain bike is built with a durable steel mountain frame and front suspension fork that are designed to take the abuse of bumps and dips found on dirt paths and trails. 21-speed twist shifters and the Shimano rear derailleur offer complete control over resistance and speed while traveling, giving you a wide gear range and letting you fine-tune your ride as you go. The Excursion benefits from light and strong alloy rims that help lighten the load and knobby mountain tires that dig into dirt, sand or grass on your toughest rides. Slowing down to a halt, even on a steep hill, is simple thanks to the front disc and rear V-brakes. Add in the steel 3-piece crank for superior gearing and there's only one choice for your next adventure. Take on new trails with the Mongoose Excursion. |

I like KevCentral, he has a lot of good reviews for budget bikes. If you're a casual rider you'll probably do fine one some of the ones he recommends from Walmart.
Most big box bikes just require everything to be adjusted and set up. However, some need more in-depth work. Examples:
ADJUSTED:
Seat for proper position.
Handlebars for proper position.
Controls (brakes, shifters) for proper position.
SET UP:
Brakes for proper functionality.
Derailleurs for proper functionality.
True the wheels.
Make sure everything is tightened enough so nothing slips (seat, seattube, wheels, controls, handlebars, etc.)
Make sure nothing with bearings are loose (hubs, bottom bracket, headset).
IN-DEPTH:
One thing I've noticed about big box bikes beyond what is usually talked about is that any bearings which aren't sealed usually don't have enough grease, often just having some light oil in them. This is something that requires some more knowledge and tools than the typical casual cyclist would have. The Walmart assembly person will not care, but this is something that local bike shops will (usually) take care of if you pay them for assembly.
Additionally, big box bikes are usually "one size fits most" and sized according to wheel size, unlike higher end bikes which have multiple frame sizes.
Finally, sometimes changing out some easy-to-swap parts might make riding these things a lot more enjoyable. Note that this isn't exclusive to cheap bikes either! Casual riders may benefit from a more comfortable seat/saddle on most bicycles regardless of bicycle cost or origin.
http://bigboxbikes.com/ is a great resource for talking about these cheap bikes.
Just last year I gave away my early 1990's GT Corrado which had Deore XT parts... and cantilever brakes. Oh the horror!

Could you share what tune ups would need done to the bikes? The reviews are scary, some saying the bike breaking just after 2 light use
I adjusted the front and rear derailleurs, front and rear brakes. I had to reroute the front brake line because it was routed wierd

On top of that, the hilariously-heavy frame and wheels make it a struggle to ride on the street compared to a road bike.
In all honesty, I would buy myself a cheap road bike before ever buying one of those. At least those can be ridden somewhat enjoyably on the road, whereas this is just terrible everywhere.
Note: this applies for adults only, kids don't care about this.
Note 2: even if the several hundred dollars you see the Dick's bikes going for on here seems steep, those can actually be used on blues multiple times without being suicide and miserable. And, if you break the WM bike, you still need to shell out money to replace it.
Note 3: shop around on Facebook marketplace and Craigslist. Your money will go further.
