Prices for these haven't dropped in close to a year, but newer mid tier GPUs aren't much of a performance boost. Most people would say to buy used, but I have been burned on a used GPU before.

Microcenter has MSI 580 for $149 AR, it appears you can buy online for those who don't have one in-town.

Considering this is the same price as the RX 5500 4gb and GTX 1650 Super, the only reason to consider it would be the 8gb vram-buffer.

That said, the RX 580 doesn't typically have the power to game at higher than 1080p resolution (e-sports titles like fortnite excluded), and the 8-gigs of vram doesn't have much if any impact on 1080p gaming (unless you have 8 or less gigs of system ram, and then the 8-gb vram can occasionally get you extra performance). It's a great card and all, but it's pretty power-hungry at stock settings compared to the 1650 Super and 5500, easily drawing twice the power.

Everyone is welcome to make their own decision regarding what they buy naturally, but personally I wouldn't look twice at an RX 580 at this price.

Great stuff. I recently built my first pc. In your opinion what is the most bang for the buck under $180?

I built with a used msi rx 580 4gb and the performance is lacking. I thought the 8gb would give me a boost. I want to eventually hit 144hz 1080p or 75hz 1440p

Newegg has a 5500 xt 4gb for $180 with free games. https://www.newegg.com/sapphire-radeon-rx-5500-xt-100418p4gl/p/N82E16814202361

Would a b450 support a 4.0 pcie card?

TIA

Says in store/online pick up only price. I'm 300 miles away from a microcenter unfortunately.

Well, I guess I'll start off with your gen 4 pcie card question: a 4.0 card like the 5500 will work perfectly in a board that only has pcie 3.0, such as the b450. The sole benefit of pcie 4.0 for gaming on a pcie 4.0 card is that the transfer rate improvement will allow a 4gb card to perform pretty much the same as an 8gb version running in a pcie 3.0 board. Basically when you run out of vram and the card then requests memory from your system ram, the faster transfer speed gets you more performance where pcie 3.0 takes a little performance hit in the same scenario.

I wouldn't personally buy a 5500 4gb for $180 because you can get the GTX 1650 Super for $159-$165 and that has a little better performance over-all -but neither will be able to do 144hz at 1080p high settings, low-medium possibly, and the same can be said for 1440p 75hz. You're really stuck needing a slightly more powerful card for what you're hoping to game at (if you want to play at higher graphic-quality settings).

I'd say you're looking at needing minimum a GTX 1660 Super, which will push your cost up around $40 over your $180 cap. For a little more you can get the RTX 2060 on a sale for around $280, or the RX 5600xt for around the same.. But you'd be way over budget at that point.

You'd probably be able to pick up a used GTX 1070 for around $180 though, if you're willing to go used. I know I personally would go new if it were me. Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

No sorry needed. That was very useful information, thank you.

Gtx 1650 super sounds like a winner at that price. The PCMR bit me hard and I want to do phase 2 upgrades to my rig and just built it lol.

Really looking forward to cyberpunk and want to perfect my system and monitor by then.

i have this same gpu for the same price back in november so not exactly a great deal with current market. the 1650 super is not "better" and the 580 does not "easily draw twice as much power". maxed out it runs about 50 watts higher (580=150w, 1650s=100w). its pretty much the same performance wise with one or the other a few frames higher in some games while matching on others. personally the power use difference does not matter unless youre on like a 300w power supply. i have it running with a 4790k on a 10 year old 500w antec earthwatt with 0 issues. it will run 1440p adequately depending on your game and settings

with all that said if you can get the 1650s for the same price then its a better deal strictly for the slightly lower power consumption. otherwise if you can find the 580 cheaper its a good option

Pcie 3.0 surprisingly does hurt the 5500xt (since it doesn't run at 16x natively in pcie 4 or 3.)

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.neowin.net/amp/pcie-30-could-be-crippling-amds-rx-5500-xt-performance/

For the OP though, I wouldn't recommend replacing a 4gb 580 with a 8gb 580. I agree that a used 1070 seems like the best upgrade with that budget.

If you could double your budget somehow to $300, the RX 5700 will *nearly* double the frame rate across the board. Something to keep in mind.

recently completed build and went with the msi rx 580 armor 8gb from microcenter which came out to 149 with rebate. I did a lot research of rx580 vs 1650 super and found the two cards comparable after a recent update to the rx580. If you go to youtube and see a comparison video of the two cards from the last month you see the 1650S only has like 5-7 frames more than the rx580, and in some occasions the rx580 gets better frame rates. I didn't think this small difference within the 2 cards merited $30 more so I stayed with the rx580. So far I'm happy with my purchase. But like others have said do your own research.
