Sony all around superior picture for all room / lighting environments (especially dark rooms were LG can't keep up) LG for future proof 2.1 HDMI ports and wide viewing angles.
RTING.com summary of the two head to head.
The Sony X900F is a slightly better TV than the LG SM9000. The Sony feels a bit better-built, has much richer blacks, better local dimming, can get much brighter, looks much better pre-calibration, and has better motion handling. On the other hand, the LG has a much better smart interface, and much wider viewing angles thanks to its IPS panel.
Our Verdict 75SM9070PUA
7.1 Movies
This is a decent TV for watching movies in a dark room. It can play 24p movies judder-free, which is great, and it has a great motion interpolation feature. Unfortunately, it doesn't look very good in a dark room, though, as, like most IPS TVs, it can't display deep, uniform blacks in a dark room, and the local dimming feature doesn't help much.

Great movie performance. Blacks are deep and uniform, with local dimming to improve dark scenes. The picture quality is great and colors are accurate out-of-the-box. 24p movies are displayed smoothly, which is good.

How does this compare to the Sony X900F (I think) that's 1500 right now

I had the 75 Sony 850 and it had horrible blooming in the middle of the screen. Returned it for bought this, the local dimming is terrible with dark scenes and the blooming is annoying. Best to get a TV from Costco or Bestbuy that you can return easily if it has uniformity issues. At this size it is an issue with all brands.
Sony products check for DRM. I used to use a PlayStation as both my BD player and media server until Sony put out an update that caused my legal rips of DVD's/BD's that I owned to have all sorts of audio issues. I sold my PlayStation and will never own another piece of Sony A/V equipment again.

I never had an issue to this day on my ps4 with any ripped movie to TV show. Owned or torrent.
