"What has Caleres done to AE quality?
February 20, 2019
Where do I begin? I have owned a dozen or so pair of Allen Edmunds shoes over the past 25+ years. I bought my first pair in the Pentagon whilst assigned there in the early 90s, they used to have a great military discount program through the clothing sales store. I still have one pair that I bought back then and have been resoled multiple times. Those were great shoes and they still take a nice shine.
Fast-forward and AE's concern for loyal customers has waned...
I needed a new pair of black wingtips, and these looked nice. I didn't realize until after my purchase that they aren't explicitly stated to be refinishable. I now see why.
In spite of the price, I cannot believe the poor quality of the leather. I was just cleaning and shining my dress shoes - I only use Saphir products - I had the leather dye on the sides of these shoes coming off in my hands from the use of the gentle saddle soap! The texture of the leather represented sandpaper when I finished cleaning. I was stunned at how much dye came off, and how the texture of the leather roughened up with the sickeningly easy removal of the factory finish.
$500 for basically throw-away shoes? Caleres, what have you done to my cherished Allen Edmunds???"

That being true aside, these are not mainline shoes that demand(ed) higher prices. Plus, I've seen the Eastports for less. Lukewarm deal.

The Rafael at this price is an awesome deal. Been wearing them in black, they're comfortable and formal enough to wear with a suit. Just ordered another pair in brown.

Allen Edmunds either has a troll problem or a quality problem. Ive never has much issue with their products.

Was about to post the cordovan shell leather wallet. Definitely a steal at $113, matter of fact you probably can't find anything remotely close from any brand

I think the cheaper models were seeing now are garbage lots of it made in DR. I ordered four pairs of shoes last deal around and i returned all of them.

I think you can still get decent shoes if you pay close to rack rate (3-400 bucks). But if you get a pair of shoes that's less than that, you're gonna be disappointed.

Bought a dozen pairs over 25 years and still hasn't learned to spell Edmonds...
