I just got an email from 1985...they want their comment back. 😁
The fax is less of an issue than the glaring omission of a document feeder. If I'm scanning papers, it is most definitely not one at a time on the flatbed.
user hint. have your router assign a static dhcp address to your printer. The router will then always assign the same network address to the device based on its mac address. One should do this for all shared devices on the network - printers, nas, security systems and such.

need a fax option? Just use www.faxzero.com [faxzero.com] free faxes (3 pages at a time for free) and you just upload PDF's, word docs, etc. Unfortunately, many medical offices require faxes as email attachments are not seen as "secure"... our medical system is so outdated! save yourself the hassle and don't get a printer with fax function! just my $.02

Question. I have probably several hundred recipes, both clipped and handwritten that I want to electronically catalog. I have a Canon flatbed scanner/printer that has served us fine for our limited print/scan needs. But to use it for scanning all of the recipes would take forever (maybe literally). Would the ADF model mentioned be my best solution? Bring it to the store to get done? Some kind of web service? Any help would be much appreciated.

If this was a one-time project scanned in smaller batches, one of the Brothers with the ADF might work. They are great for occasional scanning. I scan documents at 300 and photos at 600 on AIOs. HOWEVER, I am digitizing lots of photo albums and docs. A dedicated scanner works better. Less problems with jams and sometimes include better software. I think the scan quality is a bit better too. My Epson ES-300w is a couple years old but it works well. It runs off usb, battery, or power. Can use a laptop and this portable scanner in the comfort of a recliner. Does double side. For work scanning, we use the larger and more expensive Canon scanners. All-in-ones are good multi-purpose but the scanning isn't generally their strength but more like a convenience for everyday tasks, so it depends on the size and frequency of your project as I think scan quality should work for documents.

This is probably a one time thing. But upon looking a little closer it will take quite a bit to accomplish. My wife's mom accumulated a lot of recipes over the years. Some magazine/newspaper clippings, some handwritten on white or yellow tablet pages. A lot of it is in a big accordian folder. So a document feeder may not be as needed as I thought.

*** Also as a thought, what about taking pictures of them individually with an iPhone?

Yes. The "Google Scan" app is your friend, even though that's really more for photos. Tons of free "scan" apps - try GeniusScan.

So I bought this printer for my 80 yo Mom a couple months ago, for this same deal, same price. Just set it up for her yesterday, and man am I impressed! Couple of thoughts:
1. Yep, it's big (but not surprisingly so for a MFP). Is there a multi-function that's not though? Can't have it both ways.
2. The speed is amazing. I have an older Dell color laser that I love, and has always "just worked". This thing is quite a few steps above that in terms of speed, functionality, and utility.
3. Just a very straightforward UI (thank goodness, since it's for my technophobe mom)

Several smallish differences between this model and the 2390:
slightly faster printing speed (36 ppm vs 32)
color, touch LCD screen vs 2 line, non touch LCD on the 2390
NFC,
ethernet
a few shortcut type apps, one of which is huge IMO: one touch button for scanning to email. This was so cool, and worked so quickly. You can also scan direct to several other apps like Dropbox, Evernote, Word, etc.
128 MB ram vs 64

I'm not sure I would pay $50 more for those upgrades, but anything less than that and I would have to think hard about it. Just the overall quickness of all the functions is likely due to that RAM. I would bet the 90 is a bit more sluggish overall, not just in print speed, but reaction times to inputs/executes.

I have used this service when I was desperate to send a fax. While it is good for a page or two it sucks for anything more and you are only allowed a couple pages a day. Plus it leaves a watermark on the pages sent. Also I have no idea about their security as you send your documents to them first then they send them for you. I would much rather have my own fax machine than risk it to save a few pennies.

It honestly seems like faxing will never completely truly die. I recently had a choice of either mailing a document cross country or faxing it to them. I faxed it to them.

for the number of times anyone desperately needs to fax something why not just go to drug store, mail store or ups or fedex store and fax it there for 20 cents a page.?

I have the Brother HL2390DW (very similar) and this is NOT a machine I would want to use for a project like you're describing due to the low quality of the scans. These entry-level machines are fine for scanning receipts/tax docs/whatever that you don't really care about. You could try to see if that's something they could do in store (probably cost less than buying a machine).. alternatively look for a ScanSnap on ebay.. read the reviews.. they're far and away the best scanner I've ever used for speed/high volume scanning.
Is there a specific ScanSnap that you would you recommend over others, considering price point and number of scans at a time? For example, I would average maybe 1-200 pages a month and mainly documents, but not photos. Finally, anything to look out for when buying a used one? Thanks!

You're so very funny. I'm a CPA. Did you know that the only way the IRS will let you send something to them, other than the mail, is via Fax?

Also, I have many clients who send me faxes every year when I do their taxes. Most of them do not have scanners.

Until recently, All-In-One meant it included a Fax. Plenty of people and businesses still use them. So this IS NOT AN ALL-IN-ONE.

Just ordered this with the free shipping since its not in stock at any store nearest me. Have wanted a laser printer for a long time, so now seems like a great time, since I just had another inkjet fail on me.

rep given to Lurker247 for the link to the .29 filler item, thanks!

With tax, total came to $79.80

I agree it's confusing among the different brands. I believe Brother uses MFC to designate which models have fax. If you like the features of the HL-l2395dw (the printer in this post on sale) but need an auto document feeder and fax, you would need to upgrade to the MFC-l2750dw. Lowest price I could find was about $100 more at time of this post. They do have an MFC-L2710dw with an LCD screen that may also work for about $40 more at the time of this post. Differences to look at include processor, memory, scan to cloud feature, and if the auto document feeder is duplex.
