Sounds like all your devices are wi-fi and cloud dependent. This Echo would add Zigbee radio as well. I like Zigbee for inexpensive battery devices such as motion detectors, open/close contacts, and water sensors. However, I prefer Z-Wave for wired devices like light switches, and this hub does not include Z-Wave support.

Still, if you are just getting into home automation and are content with using the Alexa app routines, then this would be a fine hub for you. Down the road, you will probably want to have more power and control, a better user interface, and lose the cloud dependency .. that's where a hub such as Hubitat comes into play (and they are only $69 right now).

It's for smart home items. Some are built to be controlled by Alexa but others can only be controlled by a smart hub.

From the item description page:

It has a built-in ZigBee smart home hub, which allows for simple and direct setup of compatible ZigBee lights, locks, plugs, and in-wall switches from brands like Philips Hue, GE, and Yale. No additional hub required.

Is there a reason to get a newer version or of the hub?

How is sound quality compared to the 1st Gen Echo? I can easily trade in my current 1st Gen to Amazon for a $25 GC. That silver is tempting

Is the hub old technology? I bought a Vizio TV, a Nest thermostat and a Ring Doorbell, all that responds to Alexa and I don't have a hub.
