I buy the Seagate 5TB portable.
It is shuckable (the WD is not): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JarIT8zz-HY
It's not just re-purposing the drive it's also that you can recover the data when the very delicate microUSB connector breaks. For WD, when the connector breaks you're all done.

Costco puts the 5TB Seagate portable on sale typically every 2 months or so for $90. History: https://slickdeals.net/newsearch.php?forumchoice%5B%5D=4&forumchoice%5B%5D=9&forumchoice%5B%5D=10&forumchoice%5B%5D=13&forumchoice%5B%5D=25&forumchoice%5B%5D=30&forumchoice%5B%5D=38&forumchoice%5B%5D=39&forumchoice%5B%5D=41&forumchoice%5B%5D=44&forumchoice%5B%5D=53&forumchoice%5 B%5D=54&forumchoice%5B%5D=71&q=costco+seagate+5tb&firstonly=1

You can often get it from Staples for $90-$95 if you use a coupon.

Good price if you are in need of a small form factor portable drive. I believe Best Buy had these on Black Friday for $90, so this isn't much more.

Doesn't have a sata connector inside so you can't use it as an internal drive

Are these to be avoided like the 3TB drives were? I remember reading where it's best to stick with even-numbered drives (2TB/4TB/etc) and avoid the odd-numbered ones.
