When I went you simply had to buy a visa and go. This was 2 years ago. Not sure if it is any more difficult now

Wife and I were fortunate enough to visit Cuba during the "open season for persons falling within US jurisdiction" and even then you had to be careful in terms of your reasons/justification for your trip. While what was stated above is true, please do your research and make sure you stay within the law (you may be asked for documentation before boarding).

Just know that July/August is prime hurricane season in Cuba, and generally just hot/humid weather during that time.
