Thanks for the healthy treats. Now I just need to find grain free INEXPENSIVE food of better quality than friskies or 9-lives. If anyone has suggestions please pass along for both canned and dry. Vet said feeding 9-live and meow mix is equivalent of us eating at mcdonalds every day. The meow mix ended up causing some health issues in both cats(rescue cats) when I had switched them to it.
I researched the hell out of cat food years ago. There are a lot of decent brands but I ultimately settled on Authority (petsmart/chewy) exclusive. I like it because it comes in 5.5oz cans, has different options of consistency, and some different flavors. It is not bad cost wise. Also a vet had rated it quite well in her blog.
Did you have any issues with getting your cat to transition to the new food? I tried some Aldi store brand cat food which also is supposed to be fairly good. It has no preservatives Etc. The cats are not fond of it to the point I've had to mix in some Nine Lives just to get them to eat it.
Trader Joe's sells a brand called, 'bench and Fields holisitic'. It's a dry food brand and is only 6.99 a bag! I have also done a ton of research on cat food and ingredients (and still do) and it still amazes me that trader Joe's sells this for this price. The ingredients are good. IDK if urls are allowed here, but you can read more at bench and fields website on it. I also mix in to their food glucosamine, l lysine, fish oil, flax oil, probiotics, green mix, and sometimes nutritional yeast. I make a mix of this every 2 days and feed the dry food over the course of two days then make the mix again..the green mix I use is Wholistics. I used to be in the same boat as you, I fed junk to my cats, and I am thankful there is a cheaper brand like bench and field.
edit: I looked at bench and fields website, and they sell their food for 2 times more than what trader Joe's sells it for. I litterly bought a bag yesterday (3lbs) at trader Joe's for 6.99. so if you have a trader Joe's, go there.
Sadly there's not a Trader Joe's anywhere near me. We're just now getting an Aldi closer to me so it doesn't require a special trip to get to it.
