Had one of these I decked out with mods. Complete junk. You are better off paying 10 bucks more for an ender 3. Better community support and maybe better quality printer.
I also have one of these Monoprice Wanhao i3 clones, but I have the plus model that has the touch screen and the control box built into the base. I modded it with lots of upgrades, but as soon as I picked up a Sainsmart Ender 3 I haven't used it since. Not a bad printer, but you'll spend more time fiddling with it to get consistent prints than a similar priced Ender 3

Just get an ender for around the same price. I've had several of both and this are flimsy. They were ok a few years ago but things are definitely different now.

I paid $169 in August of 2018 for a refurb of this for my first 3D printer. It's sitting on my desk right next to me and has been a great first printer. Had good quality out of the box, and slowly upgraded over time via prints and other parts. This is a solid deal if this is the one you are looking for.

Edited to add: I agree with others. If I was just starting out today, I'd probably get an Ender 3 for ~$20 more.

Expect to get a glass bed as the aluminum tends to warp.

This was my first printer and I was able to get really nice prints out if it eventually. To the point of the previous posters, the i3 was decent 3 years ago but the Ender 3 would probably be a better choice for roughly the same price.

ok, I've been finally upgrading my Maker Select V2 (which I've loved BTW) w/ the Z Extensions, Z Braces, belt tensioner, etc (I did the Mosfet upgrade early on).

For those that say they would go with the Ender 3 over this, what makes it better besides the higher Z rating?

When I looked into 3D printers, this was my first look because of the price, it stopped there. The reviews were terrible, the community support was lacking and people complained about after sales support. I ended up buying an Anycubic I3 mega S. It's been an awesome printer. I would look at Anycubic or the ender 3 for this price range. The Anycubic has a better bed and almost no assembly. The ender has a huge internet community with a lot of help when starting.

Better community support for one thing. The ender 3 community is much much bigger than monoprice. I did way more mods than you and I still ended up throwing mine in the trash after 2 years.

Here is what I did..

Z braces

Mosfet

Thumbscrews

Glass bed and thermal pad

Microswiss hot end

Flashed latest marlin software

Replaced cooling fan on hat end with blower and 3d printed cooler

Replaced belt tensioner

New y carriage bed

One thing they dont tell you is that you need to take it apart and buy an andrino board to flash new firmware for thermal runaway protection. I believe the ender 3 you can just flash new firmware.

On the ender 3 you can add auto bed level sensor which you will need because all these cheap printers have series bed issues.

After more 130 dollars in mods the i3 is still a crap 3d printer. My control box fan failed so the thing would whine like crazy. Gotta tear it apart and 3d print an adapter for a bigger quiet fan. But you know I enjoy to tinker the problem is after all these mods it's still crap 3d printer. Still had to constantly level it and screw around with it. One corner of the bed was always higher and the printer is crazy loud.

With new higher level printers you get whisper quiet operation. This printer is just crap in 2020. Spend more money get one you dont need to mod the hell out of like a side wonder X1 or something.
