If you like Synology DSM and want better hardware at a better price point you can DIY and explore Xpenology.

5 vs 4 bay and 8GB vs 4GB of RAM - that's it.

Identical in functionality with the only upside is an extra bay and double the ram. That's it.

I currently have 2x 10tb and 2x8tb in a windows spaces configuration for my Plex server. Can that be easily migrated to something like this?

Don't waste your money. Synology is not a company I'd support until they pull their heads out of their asses and match the competitions hardware. It's a joke. Just because they have amazing software, they want to skimp on hardware. Sorry but I'll pass until they get with the times.

I have to assume it is cheaper to make one of these as a DIY? Is there a guide to something that would match or exceed performance at a lower price point?

Not easily. You'll have to reformat the drives if they arent already configured in a RAID.

I love mine too. But im not going to keep promoting them while they skimp on us. But I said this software is amazing. I stand by that.
I totally agree. I've got a buddy that likes his QNAP because of the hardware, but Synology nails the software. It would be nice if one company could do both
